Do you need anything from your first employer to add a second employer?

I quit my first job and applied for an ARC with my new employer before the year's contract would have been up. When I went to get my ARC (about six months ago) I was asked for a letter from my first employer. What I had was my letter of resignation and the old school's official letter of termination. I needed them to add the new school to the ARC.

However, I've heard this point debated before and perhaps it's different in other offices. I'm in Hsinchu and use the office here.

Mom Cat, You are talking about changing visas. If you quit your first job then you need to change your visa. I am just adding a second place of work.

Don't rely on tealit as the gospel truth. That website has the same amount of information and misinformation as any other website in Taiwan.

And yes, you need your first employer's permission to add a second job to your ARC.

JZer, I'm not talking about my visa. I had already done a visa run and my new (but expensive) visa was good to go. I'm talking about having another school added to the back of my ARC.

I hope not since my first employer is not reachable. He is missing in action.

The process you are describing occurs when you change jobs and your ARC card details are amended to reflect your change of jobs. In this process, you do not have two simultaneous employers or work permits; you've merely swapped one for the other. This discussion is about keeping one job and then acquiring an additional job (not leaving the first one) legally. The info out there is that it's possible and legal but the reality on the ground is that it's not feasible.

In fact, it is definitely feasible. I did it. I can't remember the details of how logistically it happened, but I do remember is that I needed to get some documents from my primary employer to pass on to my secondary employer when they were getting themselves processed as my secondary employer.

So, if you can somehow get the documents you need from your primary employer, you my be good to go. I don't think my primary employer had to give written permission or anything, but I could be having amnesia...it was about 3 or 4 years ago after all.... Smile

Well luckily I have the original copy of my work permit. I think that is all that I should need from my first employer. I will let everyone know how it works out. I am in Taipei.
