I just got a position at the international British school, yea! It's IB, I must admit that's a bit daunting. I'd like to hear from people who have taught at IB schools, what it's like, what to expect.

I'll be teaching English and Maths, which is kind of scary, to fifth grades, so it's primary school.

I haven't taught in an all-IB school, but I did teach the IB English curriculum to secondary students during my last student-teaching practicum and it was heavy. At times, I felt quite overwhelmed because I was studying the Alberta (Canada) curriculum for my university and for my teaching certification, but then I was going to a (public) high school every day and teaching the IB curriculum. However, teaching IB in Canada is wonderful because you get students are really invested in their education and who are excited about learning. I imagine that my experiences in Canada teaching at the secondary level will be quite different than your experiences abroad teaching at the elementary level, however. Good luck!

naturegirl321, how much does an IBA school in Lima pay? You can put that in Nueve Soles, I don't need a conversion into dollars.

Don't know about soles, they quoted salaries in dollars. Anywhere from 1500-4000

I'm not certified as a teacher, well, technically, I'm elegible to teach in US schools, but don't have a license. Up to 4000, which means that you'll probably have an MA, maybe phD, and probaly 25 years of experience. I'd say most are between 1500 and 2500, however, taxes are 20 percent.

Naturegirl,

I taught for a year in an IB middle school program. I followed the guidelines for the Middle Years Program (MYP) on the IBO website. Here is a link to the Primary Years Program (PYP) in which you will be teaching:

http://www.ibo.org/pyp/

To get an idea for lesson plans, many IB schools are posting syllabi ... try googling something like PYP First Semester.

Good luck!

As I have written elsewhere, as I did not teach for the good of my fellow-men, but simply for a livelihood, this was a failure....When formerly I was looking about to see what I could do for a living...I thought often and seriously about picking huckleberries ...

Hey..

Would love to hear what you have to say about the PYP after youve been at it for awhile. I am currently teaching the DYP, and find it...easy. Never have I had such a great group of students....they are definitely motivated.

Wrapping my head around some of the papers is a little tough, but I am getting there. I have great co-workers who are helping me out, plus the school sent us to Costa Rica for training. I would definitely try to get your school to send you off for some training, it really helps.
