has become law as of Friday. Oh dear...

Restaurants have been given 6 months to comply with the law, which calls for the installation of ventilated and walled off areas for smokers. If a restaurant can't install the segregated section, they must go completely tobacco-free.

Bars are also affected. Fines for non-compliance are high, and city inspectors in Mexico City have always been very quick to shut down establishments for other offenses.

And it's not just Mexico City...a national law is working its way through Congress now.

I think that's GREAT!!! The only thing that ever really bothered me about DF was the fact that people could smoke anywhere they wanted without regards to others health!!!!!

GREAT!!!!! Very Happy

When teaching adults, they aren't allowed to smoke in class are they? I couldn't teach at a school like that.

I've never seen a school that allowed smoking in class. I have seen students smoke in company classes, usually in the lunch room, or in their office. I imagine that is becoming more and more rare though.

It is nicer in restaurants to be smoke free, but bars are more difficult. All those 'social smokers'...get a drink in them and they're bumming smokes all night. At least that scourge will disappear.

I'm hoping they'll ban it in the airport soon. Everytime I start walking in that place I have a hard time breathing because of someone smoking. Mad

You find it bad? There's only a single spot in one of the two terminals to smoke, up at the second floor, in international arrivals. The airport is a federal territory, so not subject to the new DF law, but it wouldn't surprise me if they created a smoking lounge, similar to Dulles in DC or Atlanta airport.

unfortunaltely I'm VERY sinsitive to smoke. My nose locks up 100% when I'm near anyone smoking. I always have a reaction when at the airport.

In the uni where I work, students can smoke inside the buildings but they are high-roofed partly open colonial style buildings. They also smoke in the classrooms next to the big bay windows. The principal smokes like a chimney everywhere, including in his office during meetings.

Uggh, no it's not. It's so pass!

At my university students are discouraged from smoking anywhere, even off campus. But some still do. On campus only outside.

Laughing

Yes, but it suits me!

I'm like j. I just can't take smoke. I grew up with a smoker in the house and since I've been old enough to decide my own living conditions, I'm made sure I get as little cig. smoke as possible.

Well, every country must be taking on this trend. I am a smoker, however I have been trying to quit fo a while now. For some reason when I go to Mexico for visits I hardly smoke at all, and will, hopefully, quit smoking when we move there and I start working.
When I smell Mexico City and all the polution I guess it turns me off to smoking so much. But I do agree with everyone, smoking is like loud music. One person likes playing loud music, however others can't tolerate it. It is not fair for one person to enjoy they're loud music and the other have to suffer with a headache. Same with smoking. Everyone should be respectful to others and try an compromise. Even though I am a smoker I hate eating with smoke and I hate being in places that has smoke without some form of ventilation. Even my own smoking et on my nerves sometimes. This is a great idea and it should be done everywhere!
