I've finished a contract.. my visa's running out soon.. job offers are a bit scarce on the ground right now..
How do you manage the visa issue, with no immediate job offers?
What's the best way to continue to live in Japan and look for work? What are the logistics switching to a tourist visa (rather odd since I rent an apartment here and so on), going to Korea for a visa run, etc.? |

Without a job and a sponsor your best bet is a visa run. I don't think you can apply for a tourist visa in country (don't quote me though). Just leave a week before your current visa runs out, take a holiday in another country and buy a ticket back to Japan - I think a holiday visa is good for about 6 months? That should be plenty of time to find another job. |

No such thing as a "holiday visa" except for certain nationalities.
No need to do a visa run. Ask immigration for a change of status of residence (to tourist). Tourists can stay 90 days, not 6 months.
If you have only been thinking of one FT employer to sponsor you, think laterally. Self-sponsorship. Get a few PT jobs (no private lessons), show the contracts to immigration, and if the salary meets their nebulous target for subsistence wages or higher, you will be able to renew your current visa. http://www.keepingpaceinjapan.com/2007/04/self-sponsored-visa.html |
