Hello,
Apologies if this is a worn-out topic. I have searched on the forums and elsewhere, but am having a difficult time finding relevant and recent information.
Information about me:
-I'm 23 years old, white, female, and a Canadian citizen.
-I have a bachelor's degree in computer engineering.
-I don't have a TESOL/TEFL certificate at the moment, but plan on getting one before I go to China.
-I have a little experience tutoring and volunteering with children. Not much, though.
Phew. On to my question, which comes in two parts:
1) I'd like to teach in a public middle or high school instead of a language school. How hard will this be, given that I don't have an Arts degree? When would be a good time to start applying for the September term?
2) Does anyone know a few good, reputable places to find public school jobs? Most of the sites that I've seen seemed overwhelmed with ads for private language schools.
Thank you very much for the help! |

I'm not sure of any specific sites for Public School jobs, but, if you go to www.asiaxpat.com they have a Careers section. Choose Education and then a list of ads will appear. You can select Beijing, Shanghai or Guangzhou. Schools located close to the particular city will place ads as well.
I'm not sure about the Beijing and Guangzhou ads, but in the Shanghai section I have seen numerous ads for "Teach in Jiangsu Public Schools". Jiangsu is just north of Shanghai and has a few nice cities, such as Suzhou and Nanjing.
Good Luck!! |

Thanks, Mei Sheng! That site's a new one to me, and looks very interesting.
So, the earliest practical time to start looking for September jobs would be...?
I should mention that I'm choosing preferred provinces based on this linguistic map of China:

Any of the 'yellow' provinces would be preferred. |

Related to the above, look at
http://teachinchina.chinatefl.com/
You can search by province. There are certainly some middle schools in there.
PS Apply direct to the schools, unless you are comfortable with agents. |
