I'm tentatively planning on packing up my things and heading to Ecuador at the beginning of October. I'm also a huge baseball fan. Make that a huge Detroit Tigers fan. My Tigs just landed the biggest deal of the offseason, signing two huge players to an already phenomenal roster. They are serious contenders for the AL pennant, a contest that plays itself out in the month of... October. To top that off, I live a block away from the stadium and will miss out on the riotous level of excitement that takes over my neighborhood. I really want to see them play, but I couldn't possibly postpone an opportunity to travel and teach in South America, could I?

In reality, I could never in good conscience choose baseball over heading to South America, but I am interesting in figuring out how to catch the games. I'm also curious what people's experiences are in any country, from any home country, in any sport in trying to follow your team while abroad. Have you been able to find a pub or bar that will play the games? Is there access on television? Did you watch them online? I feel like it would be a good opportunity for cultural exchange if I could drag some Ecuadorians out to watch my home team win the World Series.

Latin America, outside of the carribean, Venezuela, Nicaragua, the north coast of Colombia, and (sometimes) Mexico, is all about Futbol or Soccer. Since I'm a fan of both Baseball and Soccer, I got plenty of the latter and little of the former during my travels. Thankfully, we have the internet to keep tabs and view highlights.

Areas with significant American ex-pat communities are likely to have bars and other establishments which will bring in big American sporting events including the World Series. I think you mentioned you were going to Peru or Ecuador. You could post the question in the Peru forum or possibly PM Justin or one of the other Quito contributors about Ecuador if they don't see this post. I did not own a TV during my stay in Peru, but I found that most of the cheap hotels carried some form of ESPN Deportes or Fox affiliated offshoot which carried intermitten NFL games, regular NBA basketball and I would suspect, probably baseball. Sadly, hockey has made fewer inroads, although I would suspect it not impossible to find in this age of satellite tv and broadband internet.

In regards to your support of the Tigers, I think they have a wonderful team if the pitching stays healthy, Cabrera keeps his weight down and they stay sober in the face of big expectations. Myself, a lifelong fan of the lovable losers, the Chicago Cubs, feel that destiny is at hand as 2008 marks the 100th anniversary of their last World Series win. This has to be the year.

Well then, you can have your cake and eat it too when they meet in the World Series.
