I have previous work experience in South Korea and have been trying to go back there to teach again, but my previous director has been giving me an unfounded negative reference. So, I'm looking into teaching in other countries.

How do the benefits compare in Thailand? Do schools pay the airfare and for the apartment and compensate high above the average cost of living? Do most schools require CELTA or TOEFL? I don't have either, but could I get a job in Thailand without them?

I'd appreciate any knowledge and advice you can offer on this topic!

I'm in Seoul now after 3 years in Thailand (Chiang Mai and Bangkok) and there's no comparison. If you have a college diploma, you can work in Thailand but obviously a CELTA or some kind of TEFL certificate would be beneficial. There are NO benefits in Thailand unless you work for a uni (which I doubt you can do without a certificate) or government school (which you could do). Govt schools will sponsor you for a work permit and you'll get paid when the school is on holiday but that's it. No bonuses, no airfare, and the wages are enough to live a good life but you'll save very little, if any. The food is better, the beaches are nicer, but there's only 2 seasons.....hot and very hot. The rainy season is looooooong and wet and hot and humid. I loved Thailand (still do) but I needed a change. If you want any specific info, PM me.
Good luck

You can easily save money in Thailand. But it really depends on your lifestyle (read the 'lets settle this' salary thread).

I know more than a few people people who have taught in Korea and didn't like it. But I can't think of a single person I've met who really didn't like Thailand, aside from the heat.

I'm not a big fan of Korea, but I definitely appreciated it after working in Thailand for a year. I'm not a big spender, but I had to dip into savings every month. My advice is to work in Korea and vacation in Thailand. The glamour wears off once you've lived there a while.

You can't be serious.

Both of these points go against much of what I've learned about TEFL'ing in Thailand: A) It's impossible to save any money in Thailand, and B) Living and working in Thailand is not the same as vacationing in Thailand.

Saving money in Thailand all depends on your lifestyle. I saved almost a quarter of my salary the first month I was here in Bangkok. And this was after paying a deposit on an apartment and set up costs.

Of course living in Thailand is not the same as vacationing here. Living here is much cheaper because your learn where to go for inexpensive shopping and entertainment.
