Hello there,
In May I'll be a fresh graduate with a BS in Electrical Engineering, with no TEFL/CELTA qualifications of any kind. It's my last summer before heading off to grad school, and I've been considering teaching English abroad. I'm not very interested in making money; I'd be OK with losing the cost of my plane tickets as long as I could earn enough to live on while I'm abroad. Volunteering would be fine as long as I wouldn't have to pay for living costs (I'm not religious in any way, though).
I'm only interested in working for 2-3 months (from May to August), so I don't know what kind of gigs there are for such a short time period. I'd be interested in going anywhere, although I'd really like working in Turkey, Central Asia, or East Asia. I've been to China a couple times to study Mandarin, so I'm quite familiar with the country and speak Chinese well. I can speak Russian decently too, if that helps. I'm a Chinese-American, but I was born in the US and speak English natively.
When I was in China, I knew a couple classmates who had informal teaching gigs at 培训中心 type places, and they were Eastern Europeans with heavily accented English! I think they were there on a standard tourist or student visa. Does anyone have any experience with working unofficially in China? Perhaps I should take this question to the China jobs board.
Anyhow, I'd appreciate any advice on what kind of English-teaching gig I could find for such a short time. Thanks! |
