So there's a rumour going around that ET has finally pulled its head out of the sand as far as paying its teachers goes. I've heard that the pay rate has been changed to 20-30ytl an hour for existing teachers and 20-26 as a starting rate. Also that the rent allowance has been upped to 300 a month and something to do with monetary incentives for good performance.

Is it true? Are we likely to see a return to ET's former glory?

And while on the topic, if this is true, is it likely to drive up the pay rates of other dersanes?

I don't know about driving up the pay in other dersanes; many of them are already up in that range. I suspect it's likely that, in the long term, the other dersanes who pay similarly to English time's old rate will have to make some sort of compensation, but then, ET has been attracting hordes of new teachers for years - even with its miserably low pay rate.

It's refreshing to see, however, that ET seems to be moving (back) in the right direction. I'm not a fan of many of ET's tactics (the books, for example - I tried to like them; I really did!), but I have to admit that in my years in Istanbul, ET was the most relaxed job, and in many ways, the most fun. The students weren't the best or the brightest, but they were the friendliest, and the staff (not talking management side - though many of the management were great) were the most helpful I've ever worked with.

The only real reason I quit was the miserable pay, but since the rates HAVE increased (This has been verified by management, and believe me, the rates are GOOD), I am really considering going back to teach there part time. I can't commit to full time because of other responsibilities, but I will say that a full-time salary would be more than I was making at one of the higher paying private unis here in Istanbul.

So... it seems that ET may be worth a look again. Good pay doesn't cancel out a bad job, I know that well, but ET's never done me wrong (only my wallet), so i think I'll be paying them a visit tomorrow.

Thanks for the heads up!
