Hi,

I am currently working as an English language support teacher in Ireland but am thinking of heading away to teach for a year or so when the school year ends in May. I have thought about S. Korea in the past but eventually decided against it because I didn't honestly see that I would enjoy myself in that kind of culture. Anyone any recomendations on the best country to work and have fun for a 22 year old male?

Thanks.

Well, if we're talking fun, and fun only, let me ask you what your idea of fun is?

I want to say Latin America is the place for you, but that's my idea of fun. If your idea of fun is, I dunno, skeet shooting, then I'd say Latin America isn't for you.

Hard question to answer really...trying to remember what I was doing as a 22 year old male. Laughing Help us out here...

So if salary and ease of finding a job can be eliminated, I would agree with Guy C: Latin America. Perhaps not Chile, Argentina or Colombia would be great.

I have to ask again what kind of "fun" do you want? And having asked that, let me ask you what you mean when you say you wouldn't enjoy yourself in "that" kind of culture. For example, I had fun working in Japan for a couple of years, but I had reservations about working in South Korea. There are some notable work/cultural differences within the South East Asia area that you need to explore before writing the whole region off in your teaching tour. Laughing Laughing

When I was 22 I had a blast in Ecuador.
When I was 24 I had a blast in Japan. (Though my advise would be go easy on the 8 dollar pints! Shocked )
When I was 25 I had a blast in Mexico.--I had such a good time I'm still here at 35. Wink

22......... I'd go to Eastern Europe. Loads of culture and history that won't weird you out, great nightlife, cheap booze and stunning promiscuous women, who look like they've had a shower every day....oh yeah and a meat based diet with lots of spuds....so what more does an Irishman need:)

Poland, Czech Republic, Ukraine.

Sorry Biffin, I'd qualify you on Poland.... the place that put the fist into sophistication. Worth remembering that Central Europe is also a great place to learn the truth of the old saying "beauty is only skin deep". I would definitely agree with Czech Republic though: nice place, nice people and alot happening.

BIG ditto!
Ukraine is the promised land for 22-30 year-old, straight, single, western males. I know, I was there for two years between 25-27! Wink

in many areas of Eastern Europe (IMO). The visa situation is in transition due mostly to EU standards and reaching parity with other countries. Ukraine is stabilizing (relative to some of the past history anyway). Wages are up a bit, the situation is livable, actually rather pleasant, and the beer is almost as good as CZ. Check out the Ukraine thread for info - no matter what your age.

It's this kind of attitude that makes this 'profession' such a joke to so many people.

Although teaching may go on all over the world, it is less accessible in certain areas. Saudi for example, has strict codes about teaching. Attitudes to teaching are more liberal in Eastern Europe and Latin America though, making teaching more easily available in these areas.

Many men like teaching in Asia, though that is usually a question of personal preference. Basically, there are people who want teaching and can be taught safely everywhere.

Of course, if you are after more, and better quality teaching, you should really do a one month TEFL course before you go anywhere. Opinions differ as to which is the better. I think the Trinity, but Cambridge will also make you irresistible. Don't do anything on-line though, no nookie for those babies.

If, after a couple of years, you still want to teach, possibly as a long term career, then it will be the time to do the Diploma.
