Visas, visas, visas. What kind? How long? How much? How do I do it? Etc., etc., etc.
Below is the VN Embassy link which will answer your questions, although when you click on 'fees' it gives you an email platform from which to ask that/those question(s).
http://www.vietnamembassy-usa.org/consular_services/visa_info/
Now look at #3., Business Visas. Read the first bullet then go the second bullet where it says: If the applicant does not have a host/sponsor in Vietnam, s/he may contact the Embassy (link) for assistance.
That's what I did. I contacted the Embassy via their email link and they replied within an hour. Below - in reverse order of course - is my inquiry to them and their reply.

you may apply for a six month multiple entry visa. when you are in Vietnam, you may have this visa extended. It costs you $200.

Subject: Business Visa?
Dear Sir or Madam:
I am a sixty year old white male, college graduate and an American businessman of twenty five years, now retired. I plan to go to Viet Nam, take a month long Teaching English as a Second Language class in Ho Chi Minh City, then live in Viet Nam for at least one year and teach English as a second language.
Although I have contacted and have an encouraging inquiry from one school I do not yet have a sponsor.
My questions are:
May I apply for a business visa?
If so, what is the fee?
Thank you for your time and courtesy in this matter.
Sincerely,
Etc., etc.
This felt so easy - I speculate - I could have omitted the first paragraph entirely, left in the second paragraph and asked my questions and probably rec'd the same answers.
That's it. Good luck.
