Has anybody heard anything or had any experience with Nanyang Institute of Technology in Henan? I am applying to work there, but there is some vague thing about their behavior that makes them seem questionable.

I've been through Nanyang on the train, it's a small, dirty little city. The uni there is probably dodgy, as most schools are in small towns. I remember there only being one tall, modern building in the center of the city, it looked like big pillar sticking out of a sand pile. If you want Henan province you should probably stick with Zhengzhou, there are plenty of schools there. The vagueness could also just be a communication problem, endemic of that area. The person doing the emailing and such is probably an impoverished, overworked office girl with a poor command of English. It's pretty much a crap shoot...are you a gambler?

Everything annoying about Chinese culture is magnified in little towns. But on the other hand, everything nice and charming about Chinese culture is also heavily represented and Henan folk are friendly. I'm sure it would be an interesting and nice time, if your school treats you well.

As always, ask how many foreign teachers they currently have. Then for their e-mail addresses. I have never visited NIT, nanyang is an "older city" but that can be good or bad, depending on what you like, etc. they do have the legal right ti hire foreigners. Make them be specific on teaching hours and living quarters. Don't be afraid to ask how many sq meters. To me, it is kind of an inconvenient place if you like to travel a lot.

I'm in henan. This is the first time I didn't look at the school, or talk to previous teachers before coming here. I am paying the price.

You know, it's funny, I tried that. I only got a response from one guy, and he occasionally says things that don't sound like something a native English speaker would say. I don't know, maybe that's just e-mail-inspired carelessness.

you could post it here, we can generally tell if it's Chinese english or not. with these small town schools they'll hire non-native speaking people of other countries, like Isreal or Bulgaria.

If you got a response from only one guy...not a good sign. I hear they want ten teachers. I don't know if they have any native english speakers. (And yes, non-native speakers CAN be good teachers, but they also be cheap fodder to push in front of a class)

here, I am the only native speaker. And I won't be here next semester. I can not believe any of the teachers here would recommend this school.
