Hi,

Just wondering the salary for an American English Instructor in the Philippines...namely Davao del Sur(with a BA, TESOL, and 5 years experience teaching ESL abroad).

I would like to know what to expect on the low, yet doable end, on up to the good end, and no, I am not looking to live like a king...

but i just want to be in the know in negotiations.

Just realistic salary ranges.

Thanks and Take Care All!

Most/majority of the schools are owned and operated by Koreans who employ Filipinos for 50-100 pesos an hour ($1-$2) and work them 8 hours a day.

As an American you basically have little/no chance of working in the Philippines. The Koreans much prefer to use the local Filipino population. It makes no sense for the Korean owners to employ native speakers, when they have thousands of qualified applicants from the Philippines who can do the job, in most cases, far better than we can.

Getting a work permit for a foreign native speaker (backpacker) would not make any sense for the Korean owner.

Work elsewhere (Korea/Japan/Taiwan/Gulf) and enjoy your vacations in the Philippines. Teaching and working there is not a viable option.

Do you intend to teach in Davao del Sur? I have no idea if there's a demand for ESL teachers there. However, the province is relatively near Davao city, it's possible that Korean owned language institutes may be operating there. You can also consider call centers. They always need English trainers. The salary range for a call centre trainer is about 25-40K

Pay wise, rates in the province are comparatively lower than Metro Manila. You can always negotiate. You're a native speaker and an experienced/qualified teacher.

While it's true that the rates mentioned by Ghost are in "place." there are other companies that give good rates. Good means 800-1,200 USD/ month. It's a matter of finding the right company and being qualified for the job.

If you have other questions, I'd be glad to answer your queries.
