Hi there,

Am considering a move to Kuwait and just saw the advert for Language Solutions International. Are they a reputable outfit? Is the 800 dinar salary the norm for Kuwait? (I'm a single male teacher if that helps).

Thanks for any input!

There are 2 major points to consider with relation to this.

1. Language Solutions is a shoddy outfit.
2. 800 kd per month is an insult and an unreasonable wage for Kuwait especially considering recent inflation. You havent mentioned housing, but even with accomodation provided, the wage is still low. There are much better companies in Kuwait who offer much better salaries, not to mention the rest of the gulf.

Thanks for the info.! (I thought it sounded a bit low, but wasn't sure) It wasn't until later I noticed another negative posting on Language Solutions further down.

Guess I'll be looking elsewhere!

Last Fall several Language Solutions teachers had large amounts of cash taken from their company apartments after someone with a key unlocked the door and walked in. The Director of Studies had earlier assured the whole staff that he had the only duplicate copies of the apartment keys. The teachers had large cash amounts in their rooms because Language Solutions paid them in cash (during the Ramadan holiday), despite requests for direct bank deposit. If you work for these people - at the very least - be sure to change your lock from the lock installed by Language Solutions.

So what was the outcome? did the teachers get their money back?
Also, 800kd+airfare+transport to and from school+arpartment doesnt sound so too bad to me, for 22.5 teaching hours a week, that comes out to $35 dollars an hour, a lot more than a person can earn in KSA with a BA degree.

800KD isn't bad but you can negotiate a better deal in schools.

Miski,
I went to to Kuwait in 1998 and earned 650KD. 800KD sounds very poor.
I've heard that Kuwait has become much more expensive.

I hold a BA degree, a TEFL Certificate, have 25 years experience and have started an online Masters in Applied Linguistics-

Do you think I should try to bargain for more money with Langsol or should I just try for a diferent school?

And, If I try for a different school, how would it be done? Just go online, look up all ESL schools in Kuwait and send my resume with desired salary unsolicited? Or would it be better to take the Langsol job for one year then hunt for the best position(descretely) while I am there?

Thanks for any opinions you may post.

Hey Hobo...

Can I ask where you're doing this degree?

Go to a school, you can teach primary or High School English. Ask for 950 + rent and flight. Avoid the following schools :

KNES
KIES
A Takamul
GBA
ABS
FBS

Arrive on a visit visa and visit local schools.

Sheikh- most schools are only giving 3-5% pay rises each year.

Thanks for the replies and suggestions. I am totally burned out on teaching anyone under 18, I would probably be happier teaching adults and taking less money for it.

I have done ten years of adults and about 5 years with kids, then ten of schools that had a mix. I really love teaching kids and the kids respond well to me but PARENTS of the kids can be pretty tough on managent who then pass the pressure down onto the teachers.

Perhaps it depends on the country. How are the parents in q8?
