Jobs that being an English Language Teacher can lead to:
* ADOS
* DOS
* Assorted University positions
* Teacher Trainer
* Teacher Trainer Trainer
* Exam invigilator, assessor (IELTS, FCE, etc...)
* Assorted positions within large ELT organisations (EF, IH, BC)
* Course-book writer
and additional fields...
* Management (through DOS work)
* Linguistics
* Education
* International Relations (Okay okay, tenuous link there...)
So it's not completely "dead-end", then... |

Dear dmb,
Ah, another lost soul. I've done a number of those jobs myself - and I must admit there was a certain satisfaction in being an " administrator ". But boy - did I ever miss being in the classroom and was I ever glad to get back there again. Maybe we should start Teachers Anonymous.
" Hi, my name is John and I'm a recovering teacher ".
Nope - no good. I'd be relapsing all the time.
Regards,
John |

Let's rephrase the question. when someone asks you "what's your job?" Do you answer
a) I'm a teacher.
b) I'm an ADOS
c) I'm a DOS
d) I'm a teacher trainer
e) I'm a .... anything else
Where I work at the mo. All the "teachers" who didn't enjoy/could do teaching, have suddenly become material writers or some other title.
To teach or not to teach that is the question |

Like Johnslat I've done most of these (over the last few years mainly the last two) but I still consider myself a teacher whose largely been thrown into the other positions by a mix of coincidence and the fact that most people don't want to do those other jobs. You tend to get promoted by default!
When people ask me what job I do, the answer tends to change depending on where I am and who I'm talking to. In some countries 'teachers' have such a low status that I'll use one of the other titles. My mother never really understood what a 'Director of Studies' was, so I used to tell her I was a 'headmaster'. When trying to impress women, I would definitely use 'teacher trainer' or 'Director of Studies' as it sounded much grander. In fact, I would sometimes leave off the 'of Studies' to create a slightly inaccurate picture of me as the boss of the whole damn enterprise.
But, deep down, I know I'm really a teacher. It's what I know best and what I feel most comfortable with. In all those other positions I feel as if I've been promoted beyond my abilities like the Peter Sellars' character in 'Being There' and that at some point I'll be exposed as a fraud! |

Director of International recruitment and marketing...... lots of travel to nice places for short periods, combine it with the odd occasional training course. |

I am more concerned with climbing the "savings account ladder". I had great posts in Thailand and Japan- Assistant Professor, Lecturer, Visiting Professor, etc. At the end of the contract all that it mattered was how much money I had saved in that country. I would advise not getting caught up in the titles ,especially, when one is abroad. Watching the saving account climb beats them all hands down. That is why I am just happy to be a plain instructor in Saudi rather than an Assistant Professor at a graduate school in Thailand somewhere.
But, maybe, your situation is different. |

Dear Dave,
What about job satisfaction/enjoyment?
Is your bank account really the only thing of importance?
For a year or two, if you had a specific goal in mind, OK. But long term....? |

There are a lot more options, once you open your mind and begin brainstorming.
One of them would be to start up a website...
Hundreds of other possibilities, too. |

GBS said "Those who can, do. Those who cannot, teach".
When I was doing my teachers' certification many moons ago some cynic told me that the addendum to the above is "Those who cannot teach become teacher trainers." |

Sure, job satisfaction is important. But to me true job satisfaction is doing something that you really want, not something that market dictates-say, being a poet or an artist or a traveller, not working for someone else.
In the long term? How abour early retirement? And then becoming a free lance writer? I would find it very satisfying . |
