I keep changing my mind constantly about where I would like to study before I start my CELTA (in DF). Does anyone have any experience of Guatemala in June? It's uber rainy month there then...... but the schools in San Pedro La Laguna are so bloody cheap and some have gotten rave reviews.

Ideally I'd love to learn in Mexico somewhere beautiful, however Spanish schools in Mexico are pretty steep.

I might not get any responses here, but any input would be appreciated. I'm open to all ideas, including off the wall ones Very Happy

yea.... its a toughie....
Im looking at schools in Mex as well, the extra cost might be worth it to save hassle in guat city and travel up to mexico afterwards.... but then all the places i want to go are going to be packed with younger americans. while this will probably lead to some great parties and a damaged liver, my Spanish might not improve so much.

pick a far off little town, you'll pick up Spanish that way. Also look into exchanging English for Spanish, you'll meet locals and improve your language. What worked for me was being in a relationship where I had to speak Spanish. NOw I'd rather have a conversation in Spanish than in English.

I think this will boil down to

ease VS adventure

Do you want ease?
Choose a school in Cuernvaca or Morelia, it will be very easy to travel to DF.

Adventure?
Guatemala and travel over land to DF stopping in Chiapas and Oaxaca on the way.

How did you find a list of schools in Guatemala? It would be great to hear from teachers in Guatemala City about what it is like to live in the city and how easy it is to get jobs. What are the salaries like?

Second hand, I've heard its pretty easy to find work there. I wouldn't enjoy living in Guate City though. The majority of teaching jobs in Guatemala are volunteer. I looked for work In Xela a few years ago before coming to Mexico. Nothin' doin'. But its a wonderful place to travel, the people are some of the nicest I've ever met. To look for a Spanish school, all you have to do is show up. There are hundreds. I solved the language imersion problem by hanging out with guatemalans and Europeans. We had to speak Spanish, period. I really do like Mexico, (and I have spent time in other parts)but Guatemala is just magic...I miss it.

My cousin has spent a lot of time in Guatemala, speaks Spanish and one of the Mayan languages. The only time she spends in Guatemala City is when she is arriving or departing. She warned me to stay away.

I dont if this is what you are looking for, but it might help. Also, people who interested in quality schools should check it out:
