I believe I'll need to join the 'teacher forums' for more specifics, but I just had a general question as I'm starting to get responses from schools.

none of them have said 'must live in Japan to apply' so do they hire from the states? like, can I apply, phone interview/Skype then fly over and begin working?

You'll probably need to attend a job fair. There are various agencies (Search Associates is one that springs to mind), register with them, then attend a job fair and you can be interviewed there and then.
In fact most international schools do hire from other countries, so you'll have no problem there.
Of course it depends on your experience if you actually get the job or not.

thank you.

I've already heard from one (applied yesterday) and will be doing a Skype interview in a week.

Good luck with the interview! If you are still looking, you might try applying to some schools directly. You may already know this, but schools often list on their websites how they want people to apply - whether directly to them or through a recruiting agency at a job fair.

When I was looking at jobs at international schools (I assume you mean the ones where you have to be a licensed teacher in your own country - and not a Japanese school that has a strong ESL program - the later is the kind I am finally working at), I found the subcription only tieonline website to be useful. But, it is subscription only - I think 20$ a year or so....

thank you. I applied to a few, mainly ones that had up to 12th grade ... many of them accept unsolicited applications, so I applied to some that didn't have a language arts opening.
