I would like to ask for advice about getting started in the UAE.
My wife and I are both British, BA and TEFL holders.
We have two and five years (respectively) ESL experience in Korea, where we both held senior positions.
We are currently teaching in Taiwan, where we plan to stay for the duration of our one-year contract.
Also, we have both started our MA TESOL (part time - distance learning), which will take us three years to complete.
We would like to look for opportunities in the UAE for our next contract.
What are our chances of employment?
What kind of jobs would we be eligable for?
Where is best to look for these opportunities?
Any recommended contacts?
Any other advice?

To save you some time and possibly some rudeness from some posters.
1. There is a pretty good search function on the site. You could just put in things like
5 years experience UAE NO MA
and see what comes up.
2. or you could look over the top 30 or so threads and see what comes up.
3. you could examine the college level posts and notice that almost all of them require an MA in TESOL/TESL/TEFL/applied linguistics/ETC...
That would then force you to look at grade schools/secondary schools and realize that most of the really good ones require teaching credentials from the US/UK/Australia.
4. I'm not trying to be snippy. (no really I'm not) There are a lot of posters here who may get snippy because it seems like every week or two there are 2 to 4 really honest, happy, wonderful people who come on and ask the SAME questions you have just posted. The EXACT same questions. And after answering those questions for 20 times or so it gets rather frustrating for the experienced teachers on this board to have to answer it YET AGAIN.
So now that you have read this far.
A. Most of the tertiary positions want an MA in the above mentioned categories AND 3 years experience. (neither one of you would qualify for positions here, unless they were adjunct english teachers which may not be that nice of a position to have)
B. Many primary and secondary schools exist throughout the country but what they want, and the minimum requirements for them fluctuate. It really depends on which emirate you want to live and work in.
C. My advice is to stay in Taiwan, China, Korea, Thailand, Japan until you have the MA. Then you can get the higher tier jobs in the UAE working for more professional schools. |

You won't get senior positions with only a BA.
In fact - I'd never recommend a senior position in the UAE. There's too many agendas -- and too much chaos. |

snippy (adj) - an anger created by seeing discussion board posts not quite to one's liking - often accompanied by rudeness, a LIBERAL use of CAPITAL letters that suggest a LIFE should be GOTTEN, and a complete denial of any self-snippitude.
would this an accurate definition of snippy? Al Gore once accused George W of being snippy - wonder if W used CAPS?? |

Following from al bidarnd, how's that online Masters in Business coming along, Adorabilly? Actually, an ex-colleague of mine was the reluctant receptor of some VERY SNIPPY PMs from you several months ago. They demonstrated more than a little SNIPPINESS toward those who don't share your opinions. |

I can't remember being snippy with anyone in PM's since I got here. And looking over my out box, I don't' see anything. But since you know so much more about me and my comings and goings I'll just have to take your word for it.
It is truly amazing how childish and boorish so many folks here can be. And to think, I thought most people here who actually know me (which you must be one BJE) are actually friendly. Apparently I'm wrong. If you have problems with me, by all means just come on over and we can discuss them over a cold one.
But I guess that won't happen. So continue to be snippy... |

Shocking thought  people get snippy on public discussion boards? Who knew...
Many people, including me at times, get short tempered at some of the posts, and those who ask the same question that is answered one thread below. (or 10 times on the same page), but more often than not, it is just a mis-reading. Often a short... to the point answer... appears to be snippy. I have had people accuse me of being rude to a new poster because I gave just a simple straight forward answer or suggested that they try the search.
Well, it gives the OP some insight into the average TEFL department in the Gulf.  I hope that at least his question was answered before we descended into old disagreements.
