I'm hoping to go away again sometime next year and I'm interested in teaching in Sri Lanka (although still researching places to go in Asia and not 100 per cent commited solely to this place). I can't seem to find out much about it on this website. has anyone taught there? What are the working conditions like? How easy is it to travel at weekends?
I'm aware that pay in such a country will not be brilliant but I wondered if there are any institutions that pay well / comfortably (so I won't be completely screwed when go back home). Last time I went away to South America I only had the TESOL cert and no experience and felt this limited my job options and left me quite strapped for cash at times. I now have more experience (3 years incl EAP work in a UK university) and qualifications (further ed PGCE in ESOL and English) and wondered if anyone could recommend some good schools that I might qualify for?
As I said before, I'm not stopping my search at Sri Lanka so if anyone has any suggestions of anywhere else to go where there are good teachin g opportunites and where weekend travel is easy, I would appreciate any advice.
Thank you to anyone who can help! |

There is virtually no job opportunity in Lanka for native speakers, because there are plenty in Sri Lanka who can do the job.
When I visited Kandy, I noticed a British Council school, but they recruit from the UK and the teachers there tend to be highly qualified from top 'redbrick' British Universities.
There are plenty of small 'after school' tutorial schools in Sri Lanka, but they do not give work to foreigners - they tend to be small family affairs.

Thank you for the information... it doesn't sound incredibly positive for Sri Lanka! Saying that, I'm not entiely put off yet.
I am quite interested in Kandy and I am in the UK now so could potentially be recruited from home. The university I currently work for is red-brick, if my understanding of that is correct (I'm never sure about that term,) in that it is one of the more respected major city universities. (I'm being deliberately vague. It's unlikely that anyone I work with is going to click into this particular post, however, I want to avoid the possibility that any of my colleagues might be able to work out who it is that intends to leave in a years time!). Highly qualified? Hmm not sure. I do not have the Diploma but as I said before, I have the cert, a BA in linguistics, PGCE ESOL/Eng so maybe that's enough??? Well I can only try.
I've seen some of your posts before and it seems like you've been to several places in the area. Have you got any other suggestions for reasonable wage (for the country) and reasonably good travelling opportunities in free time? I prefer the more culturally different places. I'm aware how stupid this sounds but not Thailand, Malaysia or Vietnam because I've already been there (although not to do paid work)... liked them very much but I have a thing about not returning to places I have already been to. I probably wouldn't rule them out if the jobs were good, however.
Thank you again. I'm grateful for any info you can give me. |
