I suppose Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Malayasia, etc, etc, are all right out? Seriously, should people (like me) who are just starting out avoid some of the 'smaller' countries in favour of Korea, Japan, China, etc, etc...

Sorry about all the etc's but it seems that there are obviously some countries that encourage having alot of ESL teachers... and those that do not.

And though the line blurs near the middle (Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, etc -and I'm sure I've got some of these countries misplaced), the 'great' countries (as in pay, hours, benefits) are as obvious as the 'adventurous' countries (as in 'fun but dangerous')...

hey ... there are only few countries where you can seriously make money ... the winners are Korea and Taiwan.

This is based on their benefits: including return airfares, accomodation, etc. Beware of countries like Japan who say they pay more, but you fly yourself and lose about 20% of your pay to accomodation.

the trick is to cross check the salary in US dollars ... then work out your essential expenses.

have fun ... good luck!

Well I'm in Korea with another Cdn gurl, and we are both in a small city ...I would HIGHLY recommend to ANYONE head to a bigger city...we have NOTHING TO DO!

Seriously our town of two 7-11's is so tedious...if we didn't have our 1 video store, we would probably have run for the hills already.

Korean small towns are great for saving money though...lol...since there is nadda to do! Very Happy

And we are FUN GIRLS!!!!!!!!!! Razz

Korea is the best. What town are the fun girls at?

I say head to Seoul on the week-ends. Plenty of party-people-teachers there. Cool

I vote for Taiwan unless you get a uni gig or public school gig in Korea.
Then Korea can be a good experience. Be warned, the visa cops in Korea are a pain if you have to change jobs. Between that and the weather I would put Korea at # 2. If you can stand the middle east for long periods of time it can be great for the cash, but it's hard on the singles AND married folks.

If you are qualified enough to get a job at an international school, they can pay well, even if they are in under developed nations. Those jobs have a lot of people competing for them, and they are much more difficult to get than the other jobs.

If you go to Korea, try to speak to people who have worked at the school you want to work at. Of course, the same could be said for all schools.

Good luck wherever you go.
