If you were moving to Vietnam for ESL teaching, would you choose Hanoi or Saigon?
Some advantages I've heard for each include:
Hanoi
-Nice colonial architecture, quiet lakes (green spaces?)
-More manageable size
-More wine & French bread available (yes, this matters to me personally)
-Better pay
Saigon
-Better weather (but doesn't it get very humid?)
-Friendlier people
-Nicer beaches nearby
-Better nightlife
Any thoughts? Have I left out any major aspects? |

Yes you have, the students. I haven't taught or lived in Saigon but I have spent two and a half years in Hanoi. The students in Hanoi are quite demanding. You need to have a solid grasp of grammar, as they will ask you many questions. Hanoians' are quite conservative and this includes spending. They want their money's worth.
I have heard from teachers who have taught in Saigon, that they are not quite as serious about their studies. There are also less 'backpacker' type schools here in Hanoi also so you need to be better qualified for the job. Hope this helps. |
