| It was recommended to me that I apply for a job as a NET but... on the site it says apps should be in by 21 Jan 2008. Does that mean.... don't apply? |

Previous threads posted on this site would indicate that they do interviews several times each year after they collect enough applications.
On the other hand, this is possibly the worst time to apply. But, you should wait for someone else here with more information on this than me. |

I would just apply anyway, there is no harm in trying. They might keep your file until the next interview date, but at least its done.

In recent recruitment drives, the deadline has changed at least twice each year, so I would ignore the January 21 deadline and apply now. New contracts don't start until August 16 and many teachers arrive after that date.
The HK$ is at an all-time low against GBP, CAD$, AUS$ and NZ$ and housing costs are increasing, so a NET job is not as attractive as it used to be. |

I'm looking for the "not South Korea" + "opportunities for Spanish speakers" + "good exchange rate against the MXN and USD" job.....in Asia or Europe. |

| I have an interview date but do not think I will be able to make it. It is impossible to get these people to respond to you. I have emailed twice and no one wrote back. I don't know what my chances will be if I don't go to this interview. |

| i couldn't make a previous net interview and asked them if i could reschedule. they did offer me another date so its worth asking. the net people are terrible for replying to emails. either just keep on at them until they reply, or maybe there's a telephone number to call?? not sure of that though but their website should have some info, it should be www.emb.gov.org (i think thats correct). good luck! i'm in similiar predicament to you so let me know how you get on. xx |

Welcome to the Twilight Zone otherwise known as Hong Kong. While you waiting to contact a human being at the EMB/EDB you might want to delve into some of the literature specialising in Chinese psychology. You may find you are not the first to encounter such aspects of the HK modus operandi.
From 'The Games Hong Kong People Play: A Social Psychology of the Hong Kong Chinese' by George Adams (stress mine):
"The Hong Kong education system seems to specialise in producing a certain type of office employee who can be trained but who cannot reason. Faced with an unusual request or something outside the parameters of their responsibility, an inordinate number of Hong Kong office menials prefer to hang up, transfer the call to an unused phone or place the call on hold until the caller gives up trying. The sources of this unreasonable behaviour can be found in the life situations of Hong Kong people and the resulting coping mechanisms. Faced with the sociological reality of an uncaring society (poor welfare support), arbitrary rulers (a Colonial government) and the threat of Stalinism (the nefarious "transfer of sovereignty" in 1997), many modern Hong Kong people have developed an attitude to life based on extreme self-centredness with aggressive and cynical survivalist thinking." |

Waverly, in other earlier posts you said you live in California. Perhaps the time zone difference is a factor? Don't know when you're calling, but perhaps it's outside of office hours? Just a thought. Doesn't help with the e-mail issue, though. |

| That is quite a demeaning comment. You certainly don't credit the poster with much intelligence if you think they are unaware of, or have forgotten to allow for, the time difference between California and HK. |
