Hello, I would be very grateful if people could give me any info on this particular school, as well as a rough idea of salary that would be appropriate for a teacher with an MA and 8 years teaching experience. I don't know anything about the "packages" usually offered, accomodation rental prices, cost of living, etc... so any information is very welcome!
Many thanks

Hi Lukum,

So, you mean the "British School of Beijing", NOT the "Beijing City International School"? I presume you've already G00GLEd them and have seen the same info on the school's website and some other websites with related info...?

From a (quick) look at their website (still waiting for the page to finish loading...), and their enrollment in particular, it looks like a professionally run school. That doesn't guarantee that it's a good environment for the teachers. But, looks promising.

BTW, their website pages are taking ages to load! Maybe because it has .org in the URL the Chinese Govt are scanning the text and images 'live' as they might assume it's some NGO trying to spy on them... Or, maybe I'm just getting seige mentality from being in this country while such terrible events are happening...

I noticed on another website that they are a 'non-profit' school...? Whether that has a bearing on teachers' salaries I couldn't say.

I see they have 2 campuses. A city campus for small kids Pre-Nursery to Year 6 (2-11 years) in the very nice SanLiTun area. And, then a northern campus up in the ShunYi dsitrict of Beijing for Pre-Nursery to Year 11 (2-16 years). They're in the process of building a new A-levels campus, also out at ShunYi.

ShunYi is a fair way away from downtown, but I've never been there and I couldn't comment on what the lifestyle would be like if you lived on/near the ShunYi campus.

If it's a really professional school then they should let you live downtown (expensive rent though) and they should offer regular teacher shuttle buses out to the ShunYi campus.

I can't open the PDF's (taking too long) but I see on their website that they have some employment info for general academic teacher positions, and also for separate ESL teacher positions. I presume that the ESL positions are MUCH lower paid... but, I could be wrong...

What is your 8 years teaching experience? In ESL? Or, in GSCE/A levels etc... Is that the right terminology? Sorry, I'm an Aussie and am not exactly sure what the Brit's use...

Are you in BeiJing or China now?

If you're lucky someone who works at the school will see your post and give you better, firsthand info.

Good luck!

LFA

Many Many thanks for your response, LFA, It gives me a good starting point.
I teach GCSE and A-levels, not ESL, have an MA and 8 years of teaching in mainstream British school in the UK.
I would really appreciate someone telling me what a good NET slary in RMB would be. The package they offer seems fine to me, the usual bits, accomodation but not utilities, flights/medical covers/excess baggage allowance. What I really need to find out is:
- what is an acceptable strating slaary for my level of expertise (sorry I make it sound so posh, I don't mean it that way!!)
- what are the rents like for a 3 bed appartment downtown/villa (do they do villas outside Downtown??)

I have googled things, image as well, google earth was very informative, but there is nothing better than first hand info!
Please someone respond QUICKLY!!! that is before tomorrow evening! Smile
I know, I know, I am demanding!
THANKS!
Lukum xx

Hey Lukum,

I hope someone PMed you...

I just got back from climbing (walking up the stairs) of Mt. Huang (Yellow Mountain) during the long weekend.

The only thing I can suggest, if you still have time, is to G00GLE the "Western Academy" of BeiJing. They're one of the top International Schools in China. I know their website has a lot of information about employment conditions for their staff. You might use that for comparison.

Finally, if you don't take the job you were thinking of you could also look at the many centres offering the IB in China. I guess you probably know that's International Baccalaureate. Some of those pay very well too.

Oh. Finally, finally. BeiJing a very big city. I think the Villa's (at least the ones that you could afford) will all be well out in the outer suburbs. It's all high density apartments within 10-15km of the city centre. Some apartment complexes are 'nice', some are not.

Good luck,

LFA
