Did anyone catch this news yesterday?

Bulent Ersoy spoke out publicly about the war(operation?) in Northern Iraq.

She said: "I am not a mother, nor can I ever be a mother, but if I had a son I would never send him to war."

For this she has been threatened with 3 years imprisonment.

Has the right to freedom of speech eroded so far that people can't even speak their dissent.

I remember Sean Penn and Martin Sheen speaking out about Bush and Blair's attacks on Iraq is this not the same thing?

I'm with Bulent on this one.

this reminded me of Cat Stevens' (Yusuf Islam) being denied entry to the US because he said almost the same things in line with bulent ersoy about iraq's invasion. The land of free and brave does not allow people to enter their country so what can you expect from a developing country?

You're right. Everyone has the right to free speech.
And Yusuf Islam, Sean Penn, Bulent Ersoy, etc... all have my support when they speak against war.
The only slight difference here is that this is dissent within the country you are a citizen of, against a war being perpetrated by that country.
(Is Turkey a developing country? I thought it was pretty well developed)

If we see in the news everyday pictures of families grieving at the loss of their sons in the "operation" then we should also remember that lots of Kurds are also losing their lives, clearly in far greater numbers and many of them for no other reason than being Kurdish in the wrong place and at the wrong time.

So I think it's a good thing that Bulent Ersoy said what she did.

She is merely pointing out that war is a bad thing and not something to cheer about and wave flags.

It's hardly a criminal offence, surely?

just like amerindians lost their lands and confined to reserves. Turkey should follow its US ally and exterminate (or by politically correct wording) rehabilitate them in reserves with tax free spirits and tobaccos.

Yes! That sounds like a great idea.. but don't forget who the exterminators were... British, Spanish, European, etc.. They all came from somewhere else to settle on that land.. So the ones we call Americans now, asked for forgiveness and have tried to right a wrong.. and don't forget the Casinos... Smile
