i'm new to japan and i'm looking for the cheapest long distance method.
when i lived in korea i was able to buy phone cards, ones where you'd phone a network, then place your call from within that card-issuer's network. they saved me a crapload of money.
is there a similar product in japan? |

Do you have a PC and high speed internet? If so, Skype is the cheapest option that I've found. I call the US and it's only about 2 cents a minute to any phone or free to another PC. If that's not an option for you, Brastel phone cards are advertised everywhere.

I second that. Go to the website posted by Chinagirl and sign up for a Brastel card. Brastel will mail the card to you with coupons. You then take the coupons to any convenience store and pay. Your minutes will automatically be credited to your card. |

Now that I use Skype and get 1000 minutes for 2000 yen I feel stupid for using Braestel for 2 years and only getting 80 minutes for 2000 yen. Good for an emergency call but that's all you should be using it for if you have a computer. |

And if you have Yahoo BB with Yahoo BB phone, it is even cheaper to call the US than skype! (You may not want to call the US but if you do this is the cheapest way) |
