Hello,

I'm planning on coming to Vietnam to look for work (first time teaching) in the fall. I'm looking for some basic and clear advice. First, is the fall an ok time of year to find work? From research I'm getting more confused and I'd like some simple info, if you wouldn't mind guiding me: How do I go about getting the first job? Which newspapers to look in? Are there some rules of Vietnamese etiquette in interviewing that might not be obvious to a Westerner? What are some key points to look for in a good school/bad school, ie how do I know if I'm getting a good deal/bad one? How much pay should I expect, what's good, bad, average? What are some schools to stay away from or actively approach? What do I really need in terms of work visa/criminal background check (ie not what i'm supposed to have, but what i need to have in actuality). Lastly, my boyfriend is French- is there any way he can get a job teaching English despite not being a native speaker or else has anyone heard of any opportunities in teaching French. Thank you very very much for your help in advance. I really appreciate it.

Sincerely,
Karin

Do you have a degree and a teaching certificate? Do you have experience? Your qualifications will determine the options you have.

I have a BA but no teaching certificate; this is my first time teaching. I was also wondering about the typical teaching schedule- days/week, hours/day, many ages or just one, many schools or just one, etc. Thanks.

there are scads of French engineers in the country; the northern areas, like around Hanoi, have more French-speaking Vietnamese - that might be a better place to look so both of you can find jobs.

Does your boyfriend also have a degree? Something to keep in mind.
