I want to find work in KL. I have a degree, 8 years teaching Canadian high school, a number of years instructing at the community college level and too many years in business - several teaching management courses. In other words, I'm old(er) but have the experience to offer.
I want to teach at the secondary, college or business level and am looking for contacts to source such positions, can anyone help in this regard?
I am also hearing that the visa requirements can eliminate those over 50 years of age. I'm way older than that. Does anyone know if that is a rigid rule or can the prospective employer get around it if they want you badly enough?
I would consider a volunteer position if that would get me the visa, does anyone know of locations in and around KL where volunteers might be sought?
If you think this sounds strange the reason is fairly simple, my son moved there a number of years ago, married and is raising a family - we (my wife and I) want to move there for a year or so (now that we are retired) and get to know our grandkids but I would like to work while there.
All help and contacts would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Bob |

The only age-related issue that I have heard is for over age 60. I was told by the owner of an international school that he could no longer obtain work permits for foreign teachers over the age of 60. This is a man who has connections in the government having been the first PhD in the Ministry of Education (Harvard U, no less).
Having said that, if a school really wants you, there are ways around the age issue, but at this time -economic slump- a lot of schools won't even try to get work permits for foreigners.
It is best to take a short trip to KL and take your resume around to a variety of schools. The KL suburbs of Petaling Jaya and Subang Jaya are full of private schools, both high school and college, and they would be your best bets. The public schools are way too politicised and would want to follow the rules closely.
Good luck. |

Jati,
Thanks for the response and the suggestion. I was hoping to get something before we went over. What you suggest was the fall back position - from the info I am getting to date from a variety of sources it is rapidly becoming the primary strategy. |

Jati,
I don't know if you received my previous reply so I will try this way. I cannot send PM's as I have not been on Dave's site long enough.
Yes we would be interested in Kuantan. We were there some years back and you are right it is a beautiful location.
The other problem is we cannot be there until into September would your friend still be interested under that circumstance - if so please link us together and we can open discussions to see if there is a match with both our needs.
The second home program sounds great. I heard of it the last time we were there but had forgotten - I will look into it more closely now.
Thanks for all your help.

robert1945,
I sent the Kuantan info via PM again. No need for you to reply to me on that. If you are interested in the MMSH program, Kuantan is a much cheaper place to "retire" than the KL/Penang/Johor areas.
Regards. |
