Salvia divinorum.

Called nicknames like Sally-D, Magic Mint and Diviner's Sage, salvia is a hallucinogen that gives users an out-of-body sense of traveling through time and space or merging with inanimate objects. Unlike hallucinogens like LSD or PCP, however, salvia's effects last for a shorter time, generally up to an hour.

Saw this news story online today.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080311/ap_on_re_us/hallucinogenic_plant_5

Then read the wiki article:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salvia_divinorum

Anybody know anything about this interesting herb? What's it called here in Mexico? Anybody from Oaxaca know?

Inquiring minds want to know. Wink

Is that common or garden Salvia - as in Sage?

If so, I never knew it was wacky.

According to the linked yahoo article, it is not the same as the sage you flavor Thanksgiving turkey stuffing with, though if you did substitute the wacky sage for the ordinary kind, it would be a Thanksgiving to remember!

All I know is that the women at the market sell a salvia that is extremely bitter tasting, that is used to make a tea to treat espanto, susto, or ...rhuemtism (I've always found it strang the same thing that would treat the first two treats the third?) it relaxes people--the wiki article lead me to believe it is probably the same thing, but that the tea is not concentrated enough to make one halucinate.

NOT the salvia you see in the Mercado in the baskets!!!

This is different!

The only thing I've ever heard it called in Spanish is Hierba Mara, Hoja de la Pastora, or Hoja de Maria Pastora... and if you ask about it in Mexico by its name in English... people just get confused because of the appearance of the word Salvia.

While it is in the mint family(??)... it is not minty at all. I can't see anyone making a habit out of regularly using the stuff because its effects (when smoked) are really not that pleasant. They're usually likened to those of a whippit because the general population smokes the stuff because that seems easier than taking the sub lingual route.

Admittedly I have tinkered with Salvia divinorum and only a few times. I've introduced it to experienced users of other psychedelics and only in the smoked form as well. Nobody's been sorry that they did it, but they don't come back clamoring for more, either.

That said... nobody I know has gone to the trouble of preparing the tea or chew... which is supposed to be the real kick in the pants.

If you want good info, consult the Vaults of Erowid... http://www.erowid.org/plants/salvia/salvia.shtml

That stuff is very dangerous (for the mind) if not done carefully. its possible to get up to 60x extract in the UK. I've seen people literally lose all control of physical and mental capabilities in clubs and at festivals.
It's been sold in shops in the UK since at least 99 when i first saw it. It'll be gone soon. there are many hundreds more legal drugs that will never be made illegal. most of which are just a click away on the internet and some of which will wipe the floor with many illegal drugs. basically a lot of them are hard to prepare so its pointless spending thousands putting laws through when only true psychadelic cosmonaughts seek them out.

thats what my mate dave told me anyway.

take nutmeg.... would they ever make that illegal? its a disassociate and hallucinagen and can kill you if you eat too much.

Morning Glory... too.

I'm sure if there was a wave of abuse and a couple kids offed themselves, a local politician would hit the ground running. Generally they're just trying to pad their dossiers by writing a bill that everyone is going to vote yes on. Makes it easy to outlaw something like salvia that has only minimal potential for abuse.

To keep this a Mexico thread though...

Has anyone gone up (or down) to Real de Catorce? I was planning on going for Easter break, but found myself suddenly back in California (and still searching for gainful employment) before the break came about.

I've heard that it can be a great experience and apparently it's an interesting town. Anyone?

I tried it once several years ago. It was really strange; my depth perception was completely distorted. Other than that it didn't do too much.

I'm sure Salvia divinorum is still legal in Mexico, but I don't think it can be found in the mercados. I recently bought some online from a Mexican company.

I've only smoked the stuff a few times and it is definitely mind-twisting in a, more often than not, scary way.

When I forget how scary the last time was, I start thinking about doing it again.

It was still legal in the US a few years ago at least. I had a friend do it in my apartment and all I would say was I wouldn't recommend it.

The way to do it is you have to inhale a LOT in one moment. You will then enter the fifth dimension for about two minutes which will feel like two years. You'll probably lose all motor skills and drop whatever you are holding; when you come to you'll never want to do it again. That's at least how my friend explained it. Keep in mind it has to do with how you take it...many people buy it and don't do it right and say it doesn't work. Just a matter of having the right device, like a BONG.

Regardless you can read about many experiences of it online; but after seeing my friend do it it isn't worth it. However if YOU do do it, make sure to do it with someone who you trust and can take care of you! Not to be done alone.
