Hey all,

I am not a liar so I guess I will say my situation up front I got some sort of Dui offence when I had just turned 21 which is coming on 5 years ago. No previous offences no nothing but that. I currently teach in Korea but they have the new laws and what not and frankly China interests me more.

Everyone in Korea just badmouths china for the low pay.

Questions

1. How low is this low pay..Im not puff daddy and I have some saved cash. Is there the option of private lessons there and what is the real money situation on average.

2. Is there a background check and if so is it fbi.

3. If anyone has taught in both china and korea your insights would be nice. I dont have a Celta/Tefl liscence but if i cant come back to korea I am going to get one as Esl is my kinda job.

Any info would be great

Thanks

Phil

Privates here in general are not that big a wage earner. Smaller cities 100 RMB an hour, good money in a place like Shanghai about 220 RMB an hour but travel costs eat into this plus the time factor. Like Korea privates take time to gather.

Wages are about a third of South Korea but living costs are down. So you can live okay at most locations here but saving is not so practical.

Both places have their good and bad points.

Personally, I'm curious which of the "new laws" is so inhibiting to your working in Korea ? You mean the need to have valid transcripts directly from your university giving more "proof" of not having a fake degree or is the need to provide a clean criminal history record to the government the issue ?

hmmmmmm

Why not work at home if China is your "only choice" ?

In general China does not do criminal background checks. Some employers may, but the police/education department don't do them "yet."

But, if your ability to get a job overseas is dependent upon whether you have to supply a clean criminal history, well then you have more serious issues than getting a low paying job in China.

Think and consider expungment.

"I got some sort of Dui offence" Doen't sound too bad to me! I doubt that Korea would take notice of it. Maybe drugs but seeing that you have been there a time I doubt it. I've taught over eight years in Korea.

I got a DUI in the summer of july 2003 in the US which showed up on my
FBI record this was a first offence and prior to this had a clean
record. The case is as follows :

English Teaching Visa Procedures in Korea Now Require Fingerprinting, Drug Test, HIV Test

http://www.japanprobe.com/?p=3296

The Justice Ministry has announced that starting in less than two weeks foreigners who teach English will be required to provide their criminal record and undergo a medical checkup to renew or receive a visa.
In many cases, the new requirements will force English teachers to return to their home country to get the criminal record check. Many embassies here have already announced they cannot or will not conduct such a service.

In addition, people who are found to have committed a felony, have drugs in their system, a dangerous infectious disease, such as HIV, or a drug or alcohol addiction will have their visa canceled, the Justice Ministry said in a release.

Seems like you just need an in country medical checkup to show you are currently clean.

Ih Australia you can get a police check sent to you. There is a system that Korea accepts I forget the name of it but it also can be done by distance.

P1randal don't accept less than 4,000 RMB a month plus accommodation anywhere in China. The living here isn't that cheap unless you just want to exist. Like Korea you usually need to buy stuff to make yourself comfortable where you end up living. Locals often budget for 5 RMD a meal. I budget for about 20 as for 5 RMB you are not getting much nutrition.

Shanghai a cheap apartment goes for three to four thousand a month. So be careful of job offers that seem good but don't provide accommodation in the big cities.
