Hello everyone,

I'm currently looking to relocate to Asia, with Japan being at the top of my list. I currently do not have a degree but I have two diplomas from schools here in the U.S. I did some research here on the site and saw that you can receive a humanities visa if you have 3 or more years of experience in the teaching field. My question is that I was a volunteer who taught public speaking to for 5 years at an after school program, who I be able to use that to apply for a visa or am I just reaching?

Well, of course it counts as experience. Whether immigration says that is real teaching experience is up to immigration.

I would suspect not for 2 reasons.

1) IMO, they are looking for paid teaching experience.

2) Teaching public speaking is not what they would consider teaching English. Again, just my opinion and interpretation.

You might want to ask them. Having 2 diplomas and no bachelor's degree may or may not fly with them, too. Case by case.

Thanks for the response. You're right, i have a lot of variables in my situation. I'm just going to go for it and see what immigration says.

In the light that some people claim they can get a visa with the degree situation you're in, I'd like to ask that you report back either way on your success. Even a PM would be nice (if you are not successful, that is). If you get the visa, all I can say is... details, details, details, please.

If immigration gives me the ok to come to japan, I'll take ya out for some sake and tell you first hand all the details. If not I'll definitely post what happens.
