I'm looking for a univesity position in Shanghai that will pay me at least 20,000 RMB a month with housing?

Is that acheivable or not?

I got an offer in 2004 at the Shanghai University of Law for 4,000 RMB and turned it down.

A buddy of mine in Beijing was at an international Korean school making 20,000 RMB and so I'm guessing that there are jobs out there that pay well over the 4,000 RMB mark.

The big money is mainly in company teaching.

If you read more of your own post carefully...

...you might realize that the higher-paying jobs for foreign teachers are often to be found, not in the universities, but in some of the more specialized K-12 schools. Of course, landing one of these will require the right credentials--or a lot of luck.

As China Pete points out, uni positions paying 20k/mo. are as scarce as hens' teeth. If you're very, very lucky and have some connections, you may be able to pull 12K from a uni. They usually pay between 4-7.5k. International schools are a different case. You can make 20-30k/mo. if you have a teaching certificate and are a licensed teacher back home. Otherwise, if you want to make 20k a month here, you'll have to think about doing the following (warning: this may violate contracts or applicable laws):

1. Get a basic 20-hour-per week mill teaching job with no office hours. That should get you 10-12k.
2. Get a part-time middle/high school/mill job for your free afternoons or mornings. That will bring in another 6k at 150-200 rmb/hr.
3. Sign up with a local business training outfit to do evening work twice a week for a couple of hours. That's about 3k more.
4. Get a few private students for the weekend or get other weekend work. That's another 2-3k.

There you have it. Just trade off all your free time for working hours, and you'll soon be rolling in dough.

What Lobster is saying is only doable for a short while before you would burn out. If you have stack of prep with you then maybe but if you had to prep then you wouldn't sleep.

I'm not in a big city but I have to push / force my students to study where I'm at. I'm getting somewhat old but 25 hours is enough. Teaching adults that want to study I could go 60 hours a week but not with young people.

The other thing with Shanghai is that if you are moving about a lot fast, then the between job transport costs are not cheap.

BUT...usually after work...so hours are limited
