You seem to be a native Chinese speaker. Do you run a school or recruiting agency yourself in competition to them?
I hear that although this company posts recruiting ads from schools and also resumes from teachers, that, for regular teaching jobs, they are not involved in the process at all and do not make money from it (maybe???).
What they are mostly involved in are Summer Camps, particularly in ZheJiang. In the last few years they have arranged a few of their own programs, as well as assisted many other schools/universities to also run Summer Camps, which employ literally 100s of foreign teachers for 2-4 week Camps. As there are so many FTs involved, unfortunately, a few of them may have a bad experience.
My secondhand report from a source I believe is trustworthy. I have never worked for them, and don't know anyone in their management.

Their website, although not updated often, if at all, provides useful direct links to a myriad of schools.
Take this road, and the responsibility for your own outcomes. |

This is not a bad company by any means and it is unfortunate that someone has had an unfortunate experience with them.
The person called Helen actually used to be one of the senior members of the Foreign Experts Bureau for Zheijiang Province. At one point in time, nearly five years ago, she was actually employed (at the same) as one of the FAO's for HIST in Hangzhou, an institute where another poster on this Board is employed. For a period in time she also worked for www.teachcn.com but that was a short-lived relationship for reasons unbeknown to me.
She then took all of her expertise and the contacts that she has made and formed her own agency. They can open doors across the country and the better jobs that I have had in China have come through her portal. |

Are we talking about Helen of ChinaTEFL.com? I got three jobs using her company's web site (note: web site ONLY) by contacting the employers directly.
The secret is to not contact her, and definitely not sign a contract with her. |

Agreed. Anyone with sense contacts the school directly. And this site, unlike some others, lets you do this
Also agreed, the ads posted are often not updated.
Agreed, sounds like a competitor. Do you have any specifics about how they cheated you? |

Helen called me like six times after I contacted her about an apparently non-existent offer, she couldn't provide anything similar.
Personally I think all recruiters will screw a FT in 3 secs w/o Q.
However, I doubt there is anything especially bad about her. |

A useful feature of the site is that you can search by location, if where you want to go is important.
The descriptor of the uni I worked at hasn't changed in the four years since I left, and it was out of date back then!
The salary does get changed though - downward. |

.....and then she became the devious, conniving perverter she is today. And unfortunately, because of her powerful guanxi, she is able to get away with virtually anything.
The schools on her site are there for you to contact directly and you can sign up with them at your discretion. HOWEVER, she is a Base School operater and she will sign another contract with the school behind your back. Then she has control over you. As tw mentioned, make sure you sign with the school only. Do not accept her directly, or as a 3rd party. Insist on this when you are signing with the school.
About 2 years ago, schools were being charged Y9000 for putting ads on her chinatefl site. |

Considering that you joined this forum just over a week ago, some of us are wondering how many jobs you've had in China. Where does your wealth of knowledge about different schools, visas, and so on come from? |

Salaries changing "downward".
Interesting that. I appreciate that there're are supply and demand forces at work, but I think that as the Chinese Govt is presently trying to increase the standard of FT being recruited they should also revise their advisory salary guidelines accordingly. I don't think that the guidelines have changed in many years.
Chinese Govt FT salary guidelines: 2200-6000rmb/month
http://www.safea.gov.cn/english/content.php?id=12742712
Given the rampant inflation here and abroad over the past several years I think it's time that the base figure was tripled and the upper figure at least doubled. A lot of Govt. schools do, in fact, offer salaries marginally above these figures, but it's not enough.
Where's my union rep.?
About the conference. It seems like a good idea.
http://forums.eslcafe.com/job/viewtopic.php?t=61242
I hope the FAOs, during their private first day talks (including Helen???), are going to talk about the professional development issues mentioned by un on that thread. But, I suspect they'll also be discussing how they can keep FT salaries at minimum (1990's???) levels for another 10 years.
Of course, I realise there's a degree of "Duh!" to my supposition, and some schools and universities really are playing with a very small budget. Nevertheless, I think most schools (FAOs and "leaders") are probably skimming off their FT budgets and pocketing, or at least redirecting, quite a large slice.
Regarding North China Laowai, all his/her posts seem to be very helpful. Besides, I'm pretty sure that he's/she's been around for a lot longer on Daves using other monikers.
