Hey all
I've been chatting with a few folks who had gone to the job markets at various TESOL conferences, some of whom left the conference with actual job offers - often more than one - and some who didn't.
I've got my sights set on the UAE post-graduation and I'm planning on heading to TESOL '09 in Denver but I am curious as to how many UAEers went to a TESOL conference and left with job offers?

My friends had the same experience as yours. But are you asking if people went *from* the UAE? They don't have to because they go to TESOLArabia instead.
But there are usually a good half dozen UAE institutions there interviewing. You can also apply to other Gulf countries to see what they have to offer.
It is worth going... if that is what you want to know...

No, sorry...to clarify, I'm asking if people went to TESOL before they got a job in the UAE, and left with offers in hand. I have already decided to go, and I'm trying not to have too many expectations, but I did want to see what happened with others who went

My colleague and I flew from Taiwan to TESOL-Arabia 2008.
I had 4 interviews and left Dubai with job in hand at a university in Saudi Arabia with a standard package. It was better than I was anticipating as my MA is not yet finished.
My colleague (MEd) had 10+ interviews and he left with only one job offer as well. He has since received 4 offers of employment. One potential job is in Al Ain, another is in Qatar, the other is in Dubai and the one he will likely accept with the information he has is IPA in Riyadh.

Offers in hand at a convention are not the norm. They usually arrive within a couple of weeks though. Interviewers rarely have the ability to make a definite offer. The best/biggest employers don't give that power to the same HR staff that have to go and do the interviewing.
I found that my friends were very accurate in knowing which employers were going to make an offer though.
