I've been giving some thought to moving back to NYC, and quite a few job ads require or prefer a NYS BPSS ESoL certificate. Any idea what's involved in getting that? |

Thanks for that! I wasn't getting much joy from the website. Looks daunting, does all that apply to adult education programs as well?

Well, the links all took you to the same place (I didn't realize that when I had copied the URLs from the actual pages of the website). I think one of the reasons it looks so daunting is all the college coursework (much of which you would obtain simply by pursuing a four-year degree in Education). It appears that what it comes down to is they want you to have at least the same level of certification that other public school teachers have.

I'm not sure this would apply to teaching adults, except perhaps in a college/university setting where you'd likely have to meet the requirements for being a college/university teacher. |

Thanks for your replies. My BA is in Spanish, and I have a CELTA and two years teaching in Mexico. The tentative plan is to return and do an MA TESOL, but of course I need to work while I'm doing it. I'm optimistic about working in community center/ library/YW-YH type settings. Well, its a ways off..just thinking ahead. Again thanks |

Since you have a B.A. in Spanish, maybe you should consider an MA in applied linguistics. |

hmmm...checked out what cuny offers, and I think the MA TESOL is more my right hemisphere dominate style... (been reading up on that lately)my real fascination is ...how does learning work? how can we make it better? I am a product of alternative education, mostly, and I really relate to "Smart adults failed by the system" mostly who you find in Adult Ed.I teach efl in mexico, and lots of my smartest most dedicated, most hard-working students don't do very well on grammar tests... they have talents not being addressed by the the program I teach... |
