|
|
Hi all,
was wondering if anybody had found a cheap way to call internationally (I'm particularly interested in calls to the US, though I assume any other countries would still be helpful by analogy) from Indonesia. I recall that in Thailand, if you called from a cell phone and put in a prefix like 008 before the country code and the phone number, the rate was much lower.
Anyone got the hookup from Indonesia?
thanks |

Pick up any Indosat sim card (IM3, Mentari, Matrix etc.) for your handphone. Then;
Dial: 01016 + Country code + area code + number
To the US, it's Rp480/minute.. Bloody bargain.
It's the same price to handphones as landlines.
I use it to call Australia all the time. Reception is superb.
Here's a link for the prices based on country;

how does Skype work out from Indonesia? I guess it would vary depending on the internet connection in the area you're using it from... I used in Mexico and it was hit or miss (just like my internet connection!).
That Rp480 rate sounds great! I will definitely make note of that for times when I can't get internet. |

On our school broadband, early in the morning before anyone else gets on, Skype works OK. Unfortunately that coincides with the middle of the night back in the UK so I don't use it much. At home the incoming phone cable is just not up to the job. Not much point paying for top-end broadband installation if the signal gets bottlenecked in a single pair of crackly copper wires.
My mother gets cheap phonecards from the Post Office back home and I contribute towards the cost of her calling me. The price per minute isn't bad. |

Using a Simpati number, just dial 01017 + country code, area code, number. I'm not sure of the price, somewhere around Rp. 800/min.
Simpati and Indosat offer cheap rates because it's VOIP technology. Connections are usually decent, and a half-hour phone call will only cost you a few dollars. |
