Hello choking smokers!
From monday 19th of may you will no longer be allowed to smoke inside any building. Great news for the long suffering passive smoker.
I think the change in my social life is gonna be dramatic. No more sharing the stink of selfish smokers.
But I think they will have a few problems enforcing it in this place, anybody think the ban is a BAD idea?

I have always been astonished at some of the ignorant rationalizations that smokers make for their repugnant habit:
-It's a socal thing. You wouldn't understand.
-I need to do something with my hands.
-It helps me combat stress.
-It gives me a reason to take a break.
I also love comments made by smokers:
"I'm going outside for some fresh air", and the first thing they do is light up.
"The only sociable people in the world are smokers." Words of wisdom.

The smoking ban has zero chance of working because Turks have no idea what the meaning of the word "rule" is. Just observe them "wait" in line or drive.

"Waiting in line" or "queueing" is a phenomenon seen only with certain groups. Not with Turks. Or Arabs. Or Sub-continentals.

Yeah, but now we non-smokers have the law on our side.

Let's tar and feather 'em all and send 'em outta' town on a rail. ptooey.

(Neither do the Chinese have use for standing in line.)

Does the ban include the Shisha Pipe?

Well, I think the ban is not a bad idea!
Be careful, smoking can kill you. Laughing

So far with very few exceptions, smokers are obeying the rule of law and the difference in air quality in restaurants and bars has been improved dramatically. Even though they don't come under the law for another year most places are at least segregating the different groups. Its nice as well to drop into my old smoky lokanta and breathe fresh air with my food.

I just noticed that smokers will pay a fine of 62 million TL for smoking where it isn't permitted. Where did the government come up with this number? Why not 50 million TL or 100 million TL?

The smoking ban has been in effect here in France since January. There had been much scepticism as to whether the rebellious, change-loathing, protest-at-the-drop-of-a-hat French would obey, but so far, so good (at least in the big cities). I was in Istanbul a couple of weeks ago and was pleasantly surprised to learn of the impending smoking ban there. Thrilled to hear it's been successful.

Thing about smoking, apparently it prevents you becoming a hippie fascist who lives to mind other people's business. Now, go do something about bus exhaust.

At least buses serve a purpose. What purpose does a cigarette serve? To ruin the smoker's health, and aggravate all the "fascists" sitting nearby the smoker?

My Turkish office mate seems to think that leaning almost full length out of our window, having his regular nicotine kick, constitutes adherence to the smoking ban. Hope he gets caught or falls out...

I guess I should eat my words as the ban does seem to be working well. Will it be just as effective in the winter? I would imagine that some people will just quit rather than deal with the cold, especially some of the women smokers who now congregate outside to puff away.
