Has anyone heard of any problems with customs with people leaving China when they have been working on a L visa?

Shouldn't be a problem...not really Customs' jurisdiction.
The risk isn't in leaving...it's in living here under such circumstances.

You can only have problems with an expired visa.
But make sure you don't drop your bundles of RMB right in front of the customs man!
Anytrhing above 6000 in theory is his!
And, don't tell him you were working illegally in China. |
