Has anyone else had students freak out over rumors that the dollar will become valueless and be replaced by Ameros?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amero
One of my former students and one current one are panicking because of a video on youtube by Hal Turner, a white supremacist and associate of the highly biased Sean Hannity on RNC Fox News in the US.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tLsQ37rNMjo
Supposedly the US government minted the Ameros in Denver (obviously as evidenced by the letter "D" engraved on them) and has shipped them to China in preparation for total devaluation of the dollar to rob good white American "Christian" investors and bank account holders of their fortunes and retirement. Of course, associated with this conspiracy is the union of the US with those evil Canadians and even worse: Mexicans.
Made for a good conversation class this morning but my student/friend's belief in this hateful crap and the stress and fear he has from it make me want to fly to the US and slap the sh*t out of Turner, Hannity, O'Reilly and the rest of Murdoch's collections of hate jocks. |

Why not? It worked in Europe. New World Order and all that... 1984 here we come. That's why Mexico's a great place to hang out - still a long way from becoming the facist police state Europe, the USA and Canada are. |

I'm not saying that a police state is something I am all for. But it would be a charming idea for the victims of crimes to actually have some form of recourse, as they do in the aforementioned police states.
TLWH, I lived in SLP for 8 years. I left 3 years ago but visit often as my wife is from there. I have noticed an alarming decrease in public safety. Perhaps it's my visitor rather than resident point of view but for me (and my wife) it is tangible. A bit off topic I know but what`s your take on the good 'ole life in the SLiP these days? Would you welcome the Amero if it meant the relaxed life of Lomas 18 (or whatever its up to now) as well as a bit of public safety? |

Yes, it's definitely not as safe as it was, the chief of police was murdered, the zetas moved in to absord all the piracy etc. You'll be ok in Lomas though, you may be back just in time to buy a house in the new Lomas up on the hills above the Tec.
The government is constantly building more puentes to cope with the ridiculous amount of traffic (you couldn't fit one more car in this town) which you can find day or night on virtually any street. More malls, more starbucks - SLP is growing but in an ugly way. And for all the development, there's still nothing to do.
I wouldn't mind something in between Mexico and the aforementioned facist police states, ameros or pesos, it's still a country where only 20% of the population pay tax. |

I remember being so carefree when I first arrived in SLP. In part it was my age and being naive, but also a feeling that the problems of other parts of the Republic did not touch my boring little adopted home. Now it is getting to the point where i am not sure if i will return with my family. Something i never thought i would say.
I was in SLP 2 months ago and yes, it was gaudy. But of course all the classless new rich were just as oblivious to the pointlessness of it all as they always have been. Getting out of the goldfish bowl makes it all the more absurd.
20% pay tax? Sounds high mate....... |
