|
|
Hi,
I have just applied for an Assistant Professor position at the UAE
University to start in September 2008, and would like please to know
if anybody have an idea on what employment package to expect, such
as salary, housing, etc, in comparison for example with other
institutions in the region. Concerning the housing: is it inside the
campus or in town? I am trying to be ready once an offer is hopefully
made.
I thank you in advance for your help.

Accommodation is scattered around town - some flats, some villas. Can be a bit arbitrary how big it is too - I know an Asst Prof with a big villa, and I know of Chairs and HODs in two bedroom flats.
As for salary, the range for Asst Profs used to start lower than the range for Language Instructors in UGRU - but there's scope for promotion if you keep publishing and I believe there are regular increments too. But UAEU is reviewing all salary scales: they've sorted out non-teaching staff salaries already and are supposedly working on Faculty salaries now. |

I have it from a reliable source that employment there is the kiss of death career-wise. I mean really, world leaders in .....?
It is widely known that you will be forced out if you do not make full professor within seven years.
A lot of western educated Arabs like to work there because it is close to their homeland, elderly parents, etc.
You will find the lifestyle comfortable and the salary adequate but the students thick as posts. |

Thanks for your replies.
Tahr:
Your remarks about UAEU are they specific to the "ESL" department and professors? Or more general? I am more interested in the college of science.
Thanks again. |

I wouldn't take a job in Faculty at UAEU. There is so much fighting between staff and the Arab ex-pats will do anything to keep their jobs including 'borrowing' other faculty members research and ideas. Someone in the Faculty of Ed was just labeled as 'aggressive' for questioning some dodgy research and has had a talking to from the Dean about being more supportive of her colleagues. There are quite a few nut jobs in the Faculty of Media and Communication too. |

I don't think there is any tenure system like in the States. You work contract to contract. |

As an expat you work contract to contract - no tenure. At UAEU you need to publish, just as you do anywhere else, if you want to keep your job/renew your contract/get promotion, but criteria for promotion have been recently reviewed and are pretty transparent. The people I know in the Faculty of Science are happy there - why not search the University directory (on the web-site), see if there's someone with the same research interests as you, and open up a dialogue that way.
It's true by the way that the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences is a little strange in parts .... but there's at least a scattering of good people in most Faculties, and there are some excellent departments.
Many people on this list don't have contact with University students beyond the Foundation Programme (at UAEU this is UGRU) and I suspect many students don't even get into the faculties at all. |
