1.Eat fruit you bought in 'Zabka' for breakfast. (5ZL)
2.Go to Avanti for something like 'spag bol' for lunch. (9 ZL)
3.Have a hotdog from a kiosk for dinner. (2.50 without 'surowka')
4. Rent a room with 3 strangers in the 'Frolic Goats Hostel'.
5. Spend your days wandering around, making a coffee last all afternoon and hogging the out of date papers in the British Council library.
6. Send texts, never ring.
7. Drink in the bars that advertise beer at 5ZL or less...you'll be able to impress all the youngsters in there with your 'worldly wisdom'.
8. If you're dating, 'go Dutch' and god forbid you order a bottle of wine to share with your meal...that really would be 'having ideas above your station'.
9. Avoid all round buying, it'll make you really popular with your pals.
Yes, you can get by on very little in Poland....it's just that in an average restaurant, 2 meals, a few drinks and a bottle of wine will set you back about 150 Zl....ie C33 quid...ie $66. |

I used to spend my idle afternoons strolling down the street that led to Stary Browar (I've since forgotten its name). It was always a fun stroll.
The spag lunches did NOT cost 9 zlots when I was there. 5 as I remember. For 9 zlots I think one could hit an obiad domowy (there's one behind Sioux, I think) and get some pork chops and kompot. The milk bars are also good places for grub if you can deal with the atmosphere (no easy task).
For a nice snack, there's a little bakery (very little) in the same building on Sw. Marcin that has the mini Ali Baba. I forgot the name, but they've got the BEST hot buns in town.
Dinners with wine are admittedly expensive. Beer is cheaper. Than water.
There's a nice Kebab shack in that goofy building near Plac Wolnosci. Really good stuff. And reasonably priced.
As per fruits and veggies, why hit the Zabka when there are gazillions of street markets running daily?
Lastly, pubs. Dragon had 5 zlot beer, as I remember. Brovaria was about 5.50 or 6. |

Hi mate...the goofy building was called 'Okronglak' and the street you forgot is 'Polwieska'.(apologies for my spelling before the geeks get on my back.)
Dragon has put it's price of Tyskie up to 6.5ZL and they've banned smoking at the bar. It's by far the most popular place for students, (and lecherous teachers) in Poznan. The adults' bars in the Rynek are now very dear, but much has to do with the strength of the Zl at the mo. Hotels have gone nuts.
Lizard now has a girlfriend, Shanny is loved up, Steg is still Steg and Red Paul is no longer 'Dead Paul'. As for 'Drunk Paul'....well, I've changed. Pound Stretcher Rob is loved up, Swiss Tony is the philosopher king still and Cocko Grande still has a big shlong. Ed inherited loads, Brian is a journalist and 'Alien Autopsy' live on. Some new faces are about and oh yeah, Fat Dave is engaged. Hollywood didn't come back. So there you are mate.
Oh..and the the chicks are still all beautiful. |

You can get a week's worth of groceries at TESCO for about 120 zl.
Obiad domowy places are great--I used to go to Pod Koziolkiem (not Pod Koziolkami on the Rynek) which is right off the rynek (ul. Szkolna) going towards Polwiejska...on your left--in the alley right after Sioux...you'll smell it. The alley, not the restaurant. Best roast pork in town, 13 zl.
I used to buy the best coffee I could find in St Browar and bring a thermos of coffee to work--much better than Nescafe and a heck of a lot cheaper than buying a coffee for 6 zl at Empik.
I rented two different studio flats, both right above Stare Kino (not as noisy as you'd think...that is, until Metallica came on on karioke night). 800 zl with internet, best location in Poznan.
As for the 'adult' pubs, I only went to places on the rynek in the summer, but basically I always found these joints boring. Is there a single pub on the rynek with any character? |
