Does anyone have a body piercing or a tattoo that they were asked to remove or cover up before work?
Just curious...thanks

I don't think body piercings and tattoos that are visible will be appreciated by the employer or the students. |

Longton is right. I suspect that even in an accepting environment like Egypt, it would hardly be accepted, as far it concerned a teacher.
Hey, maybe I should get my kid brother to see this thread. He is a young IT professional who writes code in Linux and tends to be a non-conformist. When he asked me about getting a tattoo, my response was to get one that wasn't permanent. He wasn't convinced, saying that it (a non-permanent tattoo) would be considered infra-dig by his peers.
My response was that, "All those old hippies in Goa look pretty stupid with their wrinkles obscuring those 'once cool' tattoos".
He wears his hair long, though I persuaded him to chop it off, before coming over to Bahrain for the Grand Prix.
Hey, he says it is a good thing. Three quarters of the girls he knows say that they dig his new look.
Anyway, smedini (please note that I'm not automatically assuming that you have one), as a teacher, I can tell you that students will go ga-ga over the tattoo and then gossip no end over it.
Regards,
Lall. |

Not sure about the UAE but in Saudi you would not be recruited if you had visible tatoos or piercings. |

Wow...I wonder, BillyBee, if this is some kind of tasteless tongue-in-cheek sarcasm or if you actually intend to be offensive with your comments (such as the 'towel-head' comment in another thread).

I think it would depend on how stylish the piercing is and how distracting it is.
For example I know of several women with small nose piercings working for HCT. I know of a couple of male teachers with ear rings.
I'm not sure how an eyebrow piercing, a full on nose ring, a lip ring, a "Monroe", a tongue stud, or other facial piercings would be appreciated (that being said, I know that one of my wife's colleagues has a student who has a very noticeable lip ring.)
pretty much any other piercings would be covered by your clothing (or should be in a professional setting) |

A colleague with tattoos on his forearms wears long sleeved shirts to work but sometimes undoes the cuffs and turns them back a bit when not teaching. And this reveals part of the tattoos. He's been here a good 10 years.
Nevertheless I'd concur that you should cover tattoos, if you have them, while teaching, and it's probably best to keep them covered all the time! |

A nose ring or nose stud on a female Bangladeshi or Indian teacher might be accepted. |

Well, lall, I am wondering why some Indian women put a ring or stud in their nose? Is it something related to culture/religion?
BTW, in the Arab culture, a man who puts rings in his ear or nose is considered as a HipHop fanatic!! |

It's related only to culture and definitely has no connection with religion. It's now less common with the younger generation across the whole of India. Many older women (including many Muslim women) wear them.
Ah! The flash of the diamond on the nose ring on a cute nose! Brings back memories. |

My wife has a recessed nose stud with a diamond. And she is Caucasian. But I think it is recessed and not extremely noticeable. She has never had anyone say anything about it. |

Not sure about this one, but have heard that having a nose ring on one nostril (don't know which one) meant that you were looking for a mate and one on the other indicated that you have one.
Much like the Hawaiian "flower in the hair", I guess. Or the ring on the finger. |
