A direct question: I'm a 45 year old single Englishman, with a masters in Education (Applied Linguistics) and 2 years experience working in a UK university (lecturing in English Language and Linguistics). I was going to work another year here and then apply to work in the ME. There's nothing keeping me here, though. So, I was wondering, is 2 years experience enough to get a position somewhere in the ME? I gather that some countries (the higher paying ones) want at least 3. I'm not bothered which country I work in. I'm not coming for a cultural experience or "seeing the sights". I'll be spending any free time indoors reading (and possibly studying) mostly, anyway .The teaching experience is most important to me and, of course, the pay. I haven't been able to save anything in the UK so it would be a pleasant bonus if I could save anything in the ME. And I could get my third (and fourth etc) years experience from the Middle East rather than in the UK.
I'm not sure what else you'd need to know. As you can see from my age, I came to higher education late. Prior to that I had an occupation nothing to do with education at all. If anyone can suggest a ME country then I'll start looking in the appropriate forum for a decent employer.
Thanks in advance.

That's just as well, because to be frank, there's not much by way of 'culture' or 'sights' in this part of the world. Still, if you are self-sufficient and can make your own fun, you should be content enough here.
Having a relevant MA is - rightly or wrongly - more highly regarded among many Gulf employers than years of experience. So I don't think you'd have much trouble finding a job in the Gulf. It's difficult to recommend one particular country - you'd be better off searching this site for jobs you like the sound of, and applying to them. Bear in mind that you're probably too late for any of the jobs starting in the autumn, and are realistically looking more at a January start. That said, advance planning is not a priority for most Gulf institutions, and many places often end up hiring staff at the last minute, especially if people drop out or are unable to obtain visas. So, start searching this board and reading up on the many different employers n the Gulf, and take it from there. |

Too many chaps posting similar posts, claiming to be so-and-so.
Sock puppets, eh?
Apologies upfront, if not so.

Lall... I think you misunderstand the term "sock puppet." Both of these people have asked a common question with some similarities.
A "sock puppet" is when one person sets up two names in order to make posts supporting her or himself... normally in causing problems and/or trolling.
Neither of these two posts come close to trolling. It is more the time of the year that people start to think about what they want to do next year or for the rest of their lives.
I think they have received answers - either on the board or by PM.

Well; this poster is in with a chance. Not like those with no qualifications and no experience who want to accumulate heaps of money in a short time ! |

Cleopatra,
Thanks for your response. You were quick, mind! I was PM-ing VS when I saw your reply. Thanks to VS, too, for a detailed PM response. Much appreciated.
I did my MA just out of interest. I'd no intention of changing jobs. In fact I was about to start my doctorate (again solely out of interest) when I saw a position in the UK, applied and got it. I had zero experience. Zero. However, there were circumstances in my favour. For example, I applied to the university where I did my MA. I think they liked the idea of an ex student becoming a staff member: the words refreshing, experiment and big risk were used! I put the doctorate on hold as I wanted to concentrate my efforts on the new job. I'd like to get back to it.
I wasn't going to mention Lall's post but...I hadn't even heard of the term sock puppet - and I'm on quite a few boards - so I looked it up: double identity...deceit...online community. I'm afraid I'm only one. And I'm not a fan of trolls. I actually wrote my post a week or more before I got access to the board. Kept it on my desktop and just cut and pasted it. At least I've learnt something.
Thanks again,
Keegan |
