Hi! This question is directed to foreign language teachers in Chinese universities. Are you being asked to make up classes for the extra day off in May? At my university, which shall remain nameless, teachers have received notice that they are to make up May 2 classes on Sunday May 4. Needless to say, teachers here are NOT happy! |

With the holiday change this year only the first of May is an official holiday. With the make up you get three days in a row, without it you get one off, work one then a standard weekend.
Make up days like this are really common, don't sweat it. |

further, i heard the makeup classes on sunday are to be friday classes. so if you have no scheduled classes on friday, you wont work on sunday, and will get four days off. |

The way my school has decided to do it is to give everyone a 4-day holiday from Thursday through Sunday. Thursday, May 1st, is the official holiday and doesn't not to be made-up. But, the Friday classes are to be made-up the following Sunday, May 10th. |

I suggested a similar plan to our school's principal, but he didn't go for it I guess - - no word at least at this time. |

In Indonesia (which is where I'm headed back soon) when such a situation arises most people get what is called a 'cuti bersama' (holiday together) such that you'd get the Friday off too. It isn't a legal requirement but the arrangement applies to public sector staff and most of the better quality businesses give their staff the day off as well. There are no 'make-up days'.
China has much to learn from other Asian countries. |

Because of the course setup, we have to make up classes as well. We were supposed to have Sunday to make up Friday's class, but I forgot and rescheduled for the following week. So, because of my mistake I get a 4-day weekend and my boss doesn't mind. |
