|
|
-Got my 1-year work visa starting October '07
-Planning to quit my job in June '08 and travel until August '08
-Might resume work upon returning
1. What requirements would I have to meet in order to renew my visa for another year? Is part-time work okay? Does it have to be with the same company?
2. If I don't renew my visa, do I need to get my butt out of the country before it expires? When/How/Does a work visa get downgraded to a tourist visa?
3. How possible is it to stay here on a tourist visa and simply exit and re-enter the country every 90 days? Is there a black and white answer to this, or does it depend on the mood of the customs official and what clever lies I tell them? |

1) You're going to need a job-I'm not sure if part-time will cover it. Probably not.
2) Yes-you better get your butt out of the country before your visa expires.
3) I have no idea about this one. |

Travel in or out of Japan?

You would need an employer. One full-time one that is willing to sponsor your visa (same or different as your original company), or more than one part-time ones (changing your work visa status to what is dubiously called "self-sponsored") if the PT work salaries add up to a figure acceptable by immigration.

You have until the visa expires. DON'T overstay! If you want to change to tourist status, do it by going to immigration and filing for a change in status of residence. OR just leave the country without a reentry permit; upon your return, the visa will be invalidated, and you will automatically be a tourist.

"Every 90 days". Only certain nationalities have the luxury of doing this for a total of 180 days. What is your nationality, and are you really in Poland as your avatar says?
You might be able to extend a tourist status. Might. Depends on whether you prove you are financially capable of supporting your stay and whether you show what they determine as a valid reason. |

Travel outside of Japan.

Thanks for the heads-up on my avatar location. I am, in fact, no longer in Poland. And I'm American.
About the "every 90 days" and "up to 180 days" business:
If my stays in Japan are shorter than 90days, am I allowed to return as many times as I want until I accumulate 180 days?
Is it "180 days a year"? |

Americans are not allowed 180 days as tourists. Just 90.

That is probably a per year figure.
Don't get the idea that flitting in and out of Japan to total 90 days is going to be easy, either. First of all, you need a multiple reentry permit. What kind (if any) do you have now? Secondly, immigration authorities are fairly strict about frequent comings and goings of people, and they may suspect something and refuse you entry at one point.
You want to leave the country, yet come back only 2 months before your visa expires? Immigration may not allow you in on a work visa. Might. You could confirm this by contacting immigration, of course. |
