Thanks to some helpful people in these forums, I think I'm pretty sold on this being my next stop. But, I have no idea where.
So... I want somewhere warm and pretty. I've been in Shanghai too long. My primary interest is the outdoors. I want some sort of access to nature, be it sea or mountains. I need to support myself, but I don't need to do much more. I will be working on a grad degree (hopefully) while I'm there. So, that will be more important to me than anything else. I would love to be somewhere that I can get to know people and have a slight sense of community. And, good food would be a nice change of pace.
Thanks and sorry to be so clueless! The advice I've been getting on these forums has been really helpful! |

Consider Costa Rica. The food's not very good, though.
Based on what you mentioned... do NOT go to Torreon. |

Torreon is warm, though isn't it? Pretty? NO. Perhaps the ugliest city in the country. But the people there are nice. |

I wonder how my (almost)wife would react to reading these kinds of comments about her city... since I kind of got the ball rolling...
Thankfully as much as she loves her home city, she's said she doesn't want to raise children there. We've looked at other parts of the country for that... near Guadalajara has been the easiest place to agree upon. I mention la Perla Tapatia because it might work as a good launching point for the OP because of its proximity to the terrain requested. |

When are you looking to come?
I assume you have a BA, do you also have a TEFL cert of some sort?
How do you feel about living in a small town where you would be just one of a handful of foriegners?
PM me and I can give you the contact addresses for universities in the state of Oaxaca that are near to nature some in the mountains, some near the sea. And should allow you time to work on that MA. There should be openings for the summer and fall. |

Apparently not Torreon...
After much research both here and other places I think that Guanajuato sounds the most like what I'm looking for. At least, I'd like to start there and see what I find. If not, Oaxaca looks nice as well. I can afford to spend a little time traveling and finding out what I like the most. But, Guanajuato really looks like a beautiful, quiet place, and I like the proximity to DF. I'm just worried about actually getting a job... What do you think?
Thanks a lot everyone who offered up their advice! |

I don't know what there is in terms of opportunity there but...
Zacatecas might also be to your liking. Did anyone mention Morelia? I don't know that it gets mentioned much on here. |

Is Guanajuato a good market? I would have thought that with its considerable expat population there would be a surplus of English teachers. Or are few of them interested in teaching? |

I would suggest Guadalajara. I really love that city. It is the perfect combination of cosmopolitan and old Mexico.
Do you like scorpions???? If you do, you will love GTO during the rainy season. I have a buddy who stayed there for a few months and he told me that when the rains come the little critters love to come inside.
That is just what i have heard though.....never lived there myself.
I do know that during the week in GTO at about 9:30pm the whold city just shuts down....I mean so quiet you could hear a mouse poop.
Oh well. |

For Spanish teachers, yes, for English teachers I'm not so sure either though an ex-colleague did get a job there. Nearby Leon has plenty of schools and unis - I'm sure there are jobs there as it doesn't seem to be a popular destination for tefl types. Also a great place if you have a shoe addiction. |

The weather in Zacatecas might not be to the OPs liking as it gets quite chilly, even cold, at certain times of the year. Morelia is a good suggestion -- it's a beautiful colonial city with lots of cultural goings-on since it's the state capital and home to the university. |
