The thread title says it all I guess. To be clear though, I'm not talking about after the fact. I'm talking about after a foot chase, in the heat of the moment. Seems to me than an inordinate amount of people escape the dragnet in this country.
Sad but increasinly common these days.

I remember sneaking out late at night as a kid. A couple times a cop spotted us and gave chase. We ALWAYS got got. LOL. I used to be half gazelle and half ninja so I give those cops props.  |

Something in the news that struck me recently was an article about a high school student who died after putting his head into a large plastic rubbish bag full of helium. I don't think he intended to kill himself, they were filling balloons for some kind of celebration, and the teacher had mentioned that inhaling helium will make your voice sound funny.
I was amazed to read that the teacher was arrested and charged with manslaughter (accidental homicide). To me there is no way it was that man's fault if an 18-year-old (a candidate for a Darwin award if ever there was one) decides to put his head into a plastic bag filled with gas- I was told from a young age never to put my head into a plastic bag at all, let alone one filled with gas.
Does anyone think the teacher should be held responsible for something an 18-year-old did to himself? I'm almost certain the teacher wouldn't have been arrested in NZ, although I can't say for sure. I feel really sorry for the poor guy, having his life ruined by an idiot teenager. |

The fact that 19-year-olds aren't tried as adults for murder, and people who do the worst of crimes while drunk are quite often given light punishments because they "weren't fully aware of their actions", shows that the judicial system here is way too soft. I mean, look at the guy who was charged with the murder and mutilation of his Filipina roommate last week; He was convicted of the mutilation, but not the murder of another young woman about 6 years ago, and was free to commit this most recent dismemberment murder.
Lots of repeat murderer cases out there; an internent check yields quite a few results.
It seems as though there isn't much willingness here to put things into black and white terms when it comes to judgement in the judicial system; the perceived difference in character between a murderer and your everyday law-abiding citizen isn't as broad as it is in most other developed nations. |

| my friend got caught "borrowing" a bike while he was drunk as it was past last train and he had a long ways to walk. Shortly after the police surrounded him and blocked off his escape route, he believes they planted the bike there as bait. apparently lotsa bikes get stolen on the weekends after a night of drunkeness. so yea that stuff happens. |

So I guess 'dangerous' criminals do get caught in this country  ! |
