Got an offer for a school in Beijing, they are telling me the salary is 22,000/month before tax and after tax that it's around 18,500

edit: School is inside second ring and provides housing if that makes any difference

does that seem right?

Read this: http://onestop.globaltimes.cn/how-is-income-tax-calculated-for-foreigners/

According to your salary you should be taxed 25%.

My school pays my tax, but from reading that article, you should get a good idea of what the tax should be.

Be wary, as I had a friend who was paying out the nose for taxes and it just wasn't worth it for him to work at the school. Many good schools will pay the taxes for you.

4800 is the standard deduction for non-taxable income. After that you can use the following chart:

Taxable Income Range--------Tax Rate (%)--------Deduction (to tax)
0 to 1500----------------------------3---------------------------0
1501 to 4500----------------------- 10-------------------------105
4501 to 9000----------------------- 20-------------------------555
9001 to 35000-----------------------25------------------------1005

22000 - 4800 = 17200

17200 - (17200 * .25) = 12900 + 1005 = 13905 + 4800 = 18705

Then there are some other deductions like health insurance or social insurance, etc. that are hidden. This looks right to me... what they quoted.

It is a tiered system. You aren't taxed 25% on everything.

Good information here^
This is exactly how I've been taxed over the past few years. I've not had any other deductions from my wages though as my company pays this(health insurance, etc.) separately.

thanks, friend say he thought the net was too low, glad to have this information, helps me make a better decision about the job.

Think I'll take the Shanghai offer I have, a little less money (not much) but a much more livable city from what I know (been to Shanghai several times)

Nice one mate. It doesn't seem to be everyone's cup of tea but I love the city and so do many of my friends (some who have departed and miss it very much)!
I'm on a lower wage than that and can still save half my salary quite easily. I go out to western bars and restaurants, etc. at weekends but during the week I'm more frugal Wink
