Hello Everyone!
First Post. Please forgive me if I seem ignorant of a few things, I am trying to learn as much as possible about how this whole english teaching in Japan works.
My first question is regarding education. I was reviewing the Jett program and my understanding is that you need a BA minimum to even get the VISA to get into Japan. Personally, I work in the field of computer graphics and design and my post secondary education was in a technical college for graphics design / Animation and computer tech stuff. What options are available to me to get into Japan? I work full time so I dont have the option of doing 3-4 years of university just to get a BA.
My second question is regarding experience. I have been working full time for the past 5 years at the same company, but previously I did have a job where I used to work with children from age 3-16 working with animals, teaching them about them and letting them hold and touch them all while having pictures taken and making a great experience for children. I do believe I have the attitude and personality to make a fun english teacher for any age student. Can I use this as part of my resume?
Third: Lifestyle in Japan... If i do get to go, one of the things that I would most like to do is travel around a little bit to the sights, see the beautiful beaches and I also snowboard... Would it be possible to go snowboarding a few times in the winter? I believe Japan is a very mountanious place.
Which organizations would I be able to work with who accept teachers without a BA? Are there any other websites/people that I can get in touch with who would be able to talk to me in more detail how to get things moving so I can get to Japan?
I would be heart broken to learn that just because I dont have a piece of paper that shows I did mind slaving work at University for 4 years is not as good as showing a solid work experience in the same field and company for the past 5 years.
your advice is very much appreciated,

It's JET Programme, not Jett.
"just to get a BA"? You underrate the value of a degree immensely. Usually, immigration (Ministry of Justice, actually) doesn't issue a work visa unless you have the equivalent of a bachelor's degree or a certain number of years of related work experience. For teaching jobs, that's 3 years. No degree, no experience? No work visa. Many people here have degrees unrelated to teaching, but at least they made the effort to get the degree.

Yes, of course! But the first paragraph answers above are key. The above experience will probably not qualify to get you a work visa.

Yes. Depending on the job you have, vacation time is different. Generally, entry level jobs are 5 days a week, but many don't have 2 consecutive days off for a weekend. And, the major vacation times are Golden Week, Obon, and New Year's, but that's also when the rest of the country has time off, too, so traveling is very expensive and congested then.

None, especially if you don't have enough experience.

This is probably the best site there is. I'm on half a dozen others. No difference in information, and in some cases the other sites are full of flamers.

Then, I will be the one to break your heart gently. It's not just a piece of paper. It's a visa requirement. Your question has been asked countless times in the 10 years I've been on this forum (and others). Bottom line is, get an equivalent education, or get the 3 years of teaching experience. Some people over the years have reported getting their work visa without experience and without a BA or BS degree, but they had a couple of lower degrees and sometimes a good immigration lawyer prepare the documents. |
