I've accepted a position with Shane and it looks like I'm going to be in Kamakura. Now I've done a search of the forum but most of the information about it seems to be from a tourist point of view.

Can anyone tell me anything about what the city is like? I am aware that it is small although it sounds like a nice area.

Anyone lived here? I am concerned that it may be pretty expensive.......

I used to live not too far away from Kamakura and sometimes worked there. If you have to work on weekends the station area can get crowded which makes it slow going getting anywhere sometimes, but otherwise it's a beautiful green area with plenty of sightseeing opportunities as you can imagine! There is a beach but it's a typical Tokyo area beach and not that lovely really. There are even lots of small quirky bars around which you start finding after you get to know the area.

It can an expensive place to live, but there is no need to actually live there- I lived in the south of Yokohama city on the same train line as Kamakura, about 15 minutes away and it wasn't an expansive area at all. Ofuna, Totsuka, Hodogaya to the north of Kamakura or the stations south of Kamakura (includes Yokosuka) are all pretty reasonably-priced and all a fairly quick trip to Kamakura.

One of my favorite places in Japan, especially during the week, when there aren't a lot of tourists and it's relatively quiet.

yes, you are lucky. Its a really nice place. Lots of history but real close to the big city if you want to go (Yokohama or Tokyo)

Kamakura has great restaurants, pretty good beaches-ok for surfing if you are into that, and lots of old people and nature. I tried to find a place there last summer but every one I was shown was crazy expensive or really old. Now I live in Hayama which is pretty darn near to Kamakura and half the price. Anyways tons of temples and shrines there as well. It gets really crowded in the summer but its by far one of the nicest places to live in (in my opinion) in Kanagawa pref.
Enjoy it!

I really like Kamakura......going on a weekday it's nice and peaceful and theres plenty of small temples to walk around and explore. Plus you're close enough to be able to go into Tokyo for shopping etc (it's about 45 minutes on the train I think).
