Does anyone know anything about the courses and subsequent "qualifications" from Global TESOL and whether they are worth the paper they are printed on? Having had a trawl on their website and the internet in general, I can't find any information with regards to how their courses are accredited or which body moderates them, nor where they get their authority from. Seeing as Global TESOL appears to also act as a sort of recruitment agency, I'm just wondering whether they are internationally recognized or only by their partners/affiliates. Any information appreciated before I get pushed into something I don't want or need.  |

| That's the problem with ESL; there is no governing body. If you can't find out any information about the company, then it's not a very comforting sign. Why not study for the CELTA or Trinity? They are respected worldwide and you will be taught some sound methodology, which will enable you to become a better teacher. |

I didn't see much of anything from outside sources about it either. There is no mention of accreditation on its website. My recommendation is to try a different organization, e.g. www.ontesol.com (a Trinity course that, if you're Canadaian and have a university degree, will also get you a Canadian TESOL certification). |

| GLOBAL doesn't offer supervised teaching practice on actual students (just peer teachers). It's not recognized as an acceptable newbie cert by the Canadian authorities, and in many regions of the world, reputable schools won't accept it. |

The JET Programme (for Japan) does not recognize Global TESOL, I believe. In fact, you get negative points on your interview/application for having such a certificate.
Global also has very specific (almost sly) instructions on how to "guarantee" you a job. Don't do things exactly their way, and you don't get your money back should you not land a job. |

I recall in the past that you had to show them something impossible, like 30 letters of rejection from schools. But, since schools don't bother to send rejection letters to failed candidates in 99% of cases, it's impossible to get your money back.
I'm not implying that these are their current terms, but there were some old posts asking how to get directors who rejected applications to send official letters saying that they had done so  |

I was thinking of looking into ONTESOL. Did you actually take the course? If so, any advice?

I like it so far and I'm looking forward to doing the teaching practicum in Toronto.
There are many accredited universities in the United States that have distance learning programs where you take their courses online (as far as taking the tests and doing the graded assignments are concerned; there are still actual textbooks and, for some courses, lectures on DVD). This really isn't all that different (okay, it doesn't have the textbooks and DVDs). For people who work and can't take four or five weeks off to sit in a classroom learning the same material, this method works well and I suspect there's going to be more of this kind of thing in the future. |

Yes, but to get to apply that knowledge - to get that experience - you have to actually get hired and, yes, the type of training you received does sometimes make a difference. |
